It does indeed have a top vent. That is what the single slider over the doors controls. The sliders beneath the doors control the air flow from beneath - they are the bottom vent.
As I said, do not use the control on the chimney pipe when burning solid fuel (as opposed to wood)- always leave it fully open.
As for a manual, have you called Villager?0
