Paypal - what will the fees be for a payment from Denmark made in Euros?

Hi all

I am looking to sell some music to someone in Denmark... They want to pay using Paypal and want to send the money in Euros...

I have had a look on the Paypal site and found it most confusing. So i called Paypal; but tbh, I don't think the rep knew what they were talking about.

So it's to MSE I turn!

Could someone familiar with foreign paypal transactions please guide me through it. I would want the funds to end up as £s i my account.

If it would be a lot cheaper for then to send me the money in £s in the first place, let me know and I'll see if I can sweet talk them into it.

In case it makes any difference, the amount in question is 562 euro.

Huge thanks

Max

Why would a Dane want to send you Euros - as Denmark uses the Krone not the Euro.
Maybe your buyer thinks UK uses the Euro?
Try simply reminding them we use the Pound and you want paying in Pounds.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
  • Hi there

I will double check, but I think it is just the case that he runs his Pyapl account in Euros. Perhaps because he does a lot of buying and selling in Europe? I don't know... But I have asked and will see what he says.

If anyone can lay out what the fees would be with

    - him paying in Euros (and me converting to Pounds)
    - him paying in Pounds (even though his Paypal accoutn is set up for Euros)

then that would be most helpful. At least then I can discuss the matter with him with the correct facts and figures.

    Thanks for the help.

You could make a payment request for £xxx from your Paypal account. Your buyer will respond to this and see it converted into DKK or EUR if his account really is in Euros. He pays and you receive your payment in GBP.
  • Thanks for the reply.

But can we just say for arguments sake that he is sending me the money in Euros... What will the fees be then (once the money has been received and converted to £s at my end)?

    Cheers
  • UPDATE: He's definitely saying he would like to make payment in euros. And seeing as "the customer is always right", who am I to argue! In fact, he's playing such a large order that I'm happy doing as he asks.

But before finalising the deal with him, I really want to know what the Paypal fees would be.

So if anyone out there can tell me that would be most helpful.

    Cheers

The fee is 3.4% +20p unless they send it as a gift when it would be free. However sending as a gift has no protection so he is unlikely to want to do this and may be suspicious if you ask him to.
  • Thanks Martin.

I can see that 3.4% + 20p is the standard fee. But on the payal fee page here:

    https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees

Under "Selling with PayPal" (at the bottom of the page) is a section that says "International Sales: Additional fees apply for currency conversion and cross-border payments.". The links 2 links (one for "currency conversion" and one for "cross-border payments") then take you to new pages and that's where I get lost. But it would seem that the fees will be more than standard....

    Most confused...
  • I'm not 100% certain as it was a long time ago I looked into it, but I believe the extra fees for the currency conversion apply outside the EU, but under EU rules and negotiations between the UK and EU, paypal, have to reimburse currency conversions between euro and pound, and in effect do not charge for that.

A seller used to selling in the EU will have to bear this in mind when selling further away such as to the US.

  • Well, that would be good news. But I cannot find anything to say this is the case on the Paypal site. Fingers crossed that it is though!

Hopefully someone can verify or clarify.

Thanks to all for the help.
  • I would not usually bump a thread, but the seller is ready to pay and I really don't want to lose him.

So if anyone can help that would be superb.

    Cheers
