Making lots of calls from TURKEY??

Hi all,

I am the best man at an upcoming friends wedding out in Turkey. As I will want to be keeping things in check for the happy couple I will no doubt be needing to make a fair few calls to check people are arriving ok and general stuff. This will mean a lot of calls both to UK landlines/mobiles, plus a few calls to mobiles of people who have arrived in Turkey too.

While I know that Vodaphone will charge me a hefty fee for calling home and receiving calls from the UK, how does it work if I am in Turkey, calling another person (from the UK) who is also out in Turkey? Is this cheaper because it isn't an international call, or does it still count as international because the two phones are normally on a UK network?

Whichever way it is, does anyone have any advice on what is the best way to go about it to save money? Would it be a mix of local phone cards and things?

Any help would be much appreciated.

yip, its classed as INT

Vodafone Passport will be great for long calls to/from UK - calling cards for short & yes a local sim for local calls

Unfortunately the Vodaphone Passport does not cover Turkey (already checked it with them).

When you say local calls, would me having a Turkish sim card ,calling a normally UK based mobile in Turkey, count as local or international again?

Sorry to be a pain, just trying to get my head around the whole thing!

Hi - whilst I can't help you with you last question, I'm wondering what vodaphone will charge you?

I just did a quick check on 1899 and 18866 - both 15p pm for mobile calls to Turkey whilst ratebuster charge 10p pm for mobile calls.

I'm registered with all 3 and go to the cheapest for whatever country I'm calling. There are probably others that could be used too.

Get a local SIM card

You can compare tariffs and other network info at
http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/turchia/turk.html

It looks like direct calls to UK landlines are in the range of 13 to 17 pence a minute, or you could look into calling cards or callback

adding to redux's post, get a sim when you arrive and get it registered with your passport and IMEI number (press *#06#) - then check it works whilst in the store - Turkey is a bit funny with foreigners using local sims - see http://www.turkishconsulate.org.uk/en/questio.htm#mobile

you can only register one handset per year and probably wont be able to use the same one if you visit after 12 months.
