Bananas over priced at Asda?
Comments

On one occasion I saw Tesco selling pre packed carrots at twelve times the price of loose ones.0
-
On the other hand, Aldi have been selling 4 Large Specially Selected Fuji Apples in a box for 79p for the past few weeks - which is pretty much the same or better price than loose or in a plastic sack.0

Somethings are cheaper buying prepacked. Potatoes, apples , pears, satsumas, leeks, courgettes etc
The four pack jacket potatoes are 80p-£1. Buying the four loose they are £1.30.
Asda were charging 57p for a bag of pears. The customer in front of me got two loose and the price - 73p!!!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I visited the local ASDA and found the loose banana rack empty. Next to this rack were 'fun size' packets and then packets of 10 bananas at £1.50. Being aware of marketing ploys I decided to weigh the wrapped bananas on the scales at the other end of the isle. Almost before I could check the £/kg rate a sticky label popped out to attach to the packet.
Amazing - the price tag was £1.15!!!!! So I stuck the new orange label over the price tag and the bananas were scanned through the till without question.
Not only did I save 35p (a massive 32% mark-up for a polythene bag), but the bananas were of better quality due no doubt to selection to avoid wasting 10 bananas if one 'goes off'.
I suppose if you don't need 10 bananas (or if you are worried the till operator might reject it) you could always open the pack and put them in a new bag then attach the printed label to that.0 -
Wow, really!? I haven't heard of this one before.0

It isnt a marketing ploy as you said they are better quality.
You arent allowed to do that0 -
That was naughty. You've commited fraud there. The scales and price label are meant for loose fruit and veg.0

Well here is an interesting little turn of events for you all
I went to Sainsburys today, Sainsburys Basics Bannanas £1.15 for 8 fruit. No price by weight etc
I decided to weigh them (Sainsburys scales are manual, no labels), they weighed around 1400 grams
Now, the next thing to point out is, Sainsburys Fairtrade Loose bananas are priced per KG, at 68p.
So, with this in mind, I did the following sum on the basics packaged brands
115 (price in pennies) divided by 1400 (weight in grams) = 0.082 * 1000 = 82p a KG
Which works out at 14p a KG more, for the "Basics" bananas
So, had I ripped the packaging off, and claimed these were loose, they would have been just 95p, instead of £1.15, so 20p less.
I was always lead to believe that basics was cheapest option, evidently not. ALSO can I just point out, that these were the biggest bunch of the basics ones, so chances are the others which were smaller and/or lighter, would have been much more than 82p a kg.
I will only ever buy loose in futureLive for what tomorrow has to bring, not what yesterday has taken away0 -

I've tried doing this but it's never worked for me - they either go black as they ripen or they just don't taste of much.0
