The general rule is that packaged fruit & veg are more expensive than loose.

The exception (as usual) is Aldi, where all fruit & veg are pre-packaged.

The bananas are a good example: 68p per kilo, same as Lidl, Morrison's, Tesco's and Asda. However only Aldi has them pre-packed, where you are guaranteed 1kg or more, depending on the weight of the individual bananas (obviously, you don't get half a banana to make up the weight).

Bananas keep fine in the fridge. And, yes, I know you aren't supposed to keep them in there... don't know why. Then, there's always Banana Bread. :)
  • Also another thing I notice is when people pick up a bunch of loose bananas they always seem to pull one off and put one back. End of night the shelf is full of these single bananas that everyone has pulled off.
Well yes, I do this. If there is just one bunch of bananas at my preferred ripeness and size and there's 6 in the bunch when I only want 5, of course I'm going to take one off as I'm paying for one that will go to waste.

Just like with loose onions, if I just want 2 I'm not going to put 3 in my bag. They're not prepackaged and you not paying for a predetermined weight so why pay for something that's going to go to waste?

The difference being that some people find buying a single loose banana unattractive, so it leads to waste anyway.

If you have the option, I would always split a very large bunch, so the leftover small bunch is still sellable.

    This.

If I want some bananas, i just pick up a nice bunch at the size I want, usually large ones. I don't care if there is 5 or 6 on the bunch, they will all get eaten. It's all goodness at the end of the day.

You do get many customers buying the packs of 5 bananas for £1 and I get 5 loose for 55-65p depending on the size.

I get up to 7 or 8 bananas, typically in two bunches, for 68p in Aldi. Quite happy with that. (I like bananas).
  • Sometimes I also just want one banana so I'd buy single one, I can only really eat one a day or they don't agree with me. Swings and roundabouts I guess, it's not up to me to make the stock more attractive for the stores' customers

You aren't. Buying one banana at a time is not the issue.

I personally am careful about buying loose items due to the likelihood of many dirty hands touching them.

Not so fussed in the case of items that have an outer layer e.g bananas but I have heard some nightmare stories about bakery items for example that are laid out open in supermarkets e.g. Croissants, doughnuts, etc! In those scenarios I would always buy something that has been packaged even if more expensive!

What annoys me so much about supermarkets is that they use different ways to measure different products e.g. Kgs, quantity, etc.

There should be a law against this as it an easy way for supermarkets to mislead consumers.

There are laws about how they can display Weights, but as usual the supermarkets use loopholes or skate close to the wind with them.
