As to why not trade actively, because I don't like to gamble, and even the professionals have trouble beating a passive tracker, so an amateur has similar if not less chance.
Statistically, I am sure there are some amateur traders making a fortune out there. Lets compare score cards in 20 years

No I'm an old lady. So my measure of performance won't be how much wonga I can sit on when I retire like you as I am already there. It's going to be measured on what it can provide now and in the near future before I finally get bunged in the furnace.0 -

Me too. Like a Flock of Sheep, except that I don't take the view that it's 'daft' to buy at this low point. It might be considered daft to sell at a loss, but not to buy now.
All this is for DH and me and for what remains of our life together.

But the market has risen a lot since you joined. And its about as easy to make money is a rising share market as it is in a rising property market, because whatever you buy is more likely to rise than fall.
