  • No, don't have to be carried in a box. Just in a gun bag. It was a pretty bad crash.

Yup, £600 for an air rifle -

Would it not be covered under the TP section?
Damage to property in your custody or under your control is specifically mentioned in the Road Traffic Act as one of the liabilities the policy doesn't have to cover.

Added: I suppose there's nothing in principle to stop an insurer covering it as an extra, but AFAIK the car's contents are a fairly standard exclusion (beyond a token £100 or so). And the problem with covering other people's property under the 3rd party section would be that everybody who crashed with a lot of expensive kit in the boot would try to claim for it on the basis that it belonged to "a friend"...

£600 is peanuts for the guys who do competitions.

A scope can cost more than that.

  • It would be covered under the personal possessions section of his car insurance assuming he has Comp cover but in most cases this is limited to £100 or £200 maximum.

Outside of that it is Home insurance. His car insurance is highly unlikely to recognise your claim under the 3rd party liability section because the item was his responsibility at the time of the incident and thus comes under the first party sections. Of cause if you had been in the car at the same time as him you would then have been covered but may have ended up in a much worse state than just a damaged gun.
