£10 Fine for Being Late

A bit harsh!
However, if the company is struggling with lateness it could be a way to improve timekeeping!
If there is a genuine reason then it shouldn't be implemented but if a person is late because they overslept then I don't see anything wrong with penalising!0 -

Some live to work, some work to live.
Personally if transport is down, I am not going to kill myself trying to jump and fly - I send and sms to wherever I work at the time notifying them I will be late and why and never had/have issues. Then I get in whenever I can transport permitting. And everywhere I worked was like that - for everyone.
I really could not work anywhere worrying about petty stuff all the time. Life is too short for p[pettiness.
The companies you worked for were clearly more accommodating and depending on your vocation being late may not have affected your ability to carry out your duty...if someone worked in retail where he ir she was the only cashier or butcher and you turned up late 20 minutes, imagine the impact in customers/business or a delivery driver for a hospital supplying organs to patients in surgery0 -

some people have very low standards.
Now you have mentioned it I agree, 10% is unacceptable, though I rarely get that issue at work.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -

Is sleeping in once in a year not a genuine reason??? Maybe due to power outage that reset the clocks in the night & the alarms did not sound??
Flat tyre or road accident??, slipped on the way to work causing bleeding and change of uniform???0 -

None of these are the employers problem!
Whilst most decent employers will show some flexibility (and some will show a lot) others will play "hard ball" which is not unlawful.0 -

The only problem the employer has is tardiness of employees which has been solved with a penalty0 -
To my mind the employer who fines you any money for lateness is simply stealing money from you. If the intention is to curb instances of lateness a robust and harsh disciplinary procedure for lateness would be much more effective.0

Having a pay structure that pays you for the hours you work and has a reasonable increment is fine so turn up late you get paid from when you start based on the pay structure.
Fines are not they are illegal deduction is they have not been signed for.
TO get round the fines they could restructure pay so that you get paid £10 for the first 15 mins then the rest of the hourly rate for the rest of the first hour then normal hourly rate.
turn up late you don't get the £10 but the total must stay over the NMW.0 -
Easier and fairer to have a robust timekeeping record and lateness policy IMHO.
I worked for a train company for many years and they had a very strict policy as they couldn't run anything at all if staff were late, even in very bad weather.
I was one of those who lived furthest away and was late once in 15 years -due to coming off a motorbike on black ice.
I got little sympathy for that too -Staff were always disciplined for lateness even when they were actually late due to one of the companies own trains having an issue/being cancelled.Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.
If you don't like my opinion feel free to respond with your own.0 -
i think lateness can nearly always be avoided, but I wouldn't work for a company which actually fined you financialy for being late.
It depends on what your commute is like and if you really want to go that far to avoid it.
Being realistic not going my prime route into work could easily add an extra hour to my journey and thats not including the being on a train when it breaks down/ someone is hit etc. My trains are every 30 minutes so I already get in 20 minutes early each day and to factor in that once a month or so when the transport systems are messed up would mean getting in 80 minutes early every day and really 110 minutes early if you wanted to be really sure you arent going to be late.
Thankfully I dont work for a company that fines you for being late and normally skip lunch/ work late etc even without time to make back up for train or tube issues etc0
