    I have lived in London and Manchester, use public transport and I haven't been late for work in 15 years.     An employer could probably make a deduction for late arrival, or simply send the staff member home, but it should be noted in the contract.

    Lol. You lived in the cities that invest the most in public transport (compared to rest of England) and boast that you were never late.

    Glad I work with normal people who also rely on public transport to commute to/from work, often with few changes on route when anything can go wrong - nobody kicks a hissy fit when someone is late.

    I live in one end of London and commute to the other - last week Central Line was down and I got in to work for 11 instead of 9. Friend covered the 2 hours for me as she gets in via one direct line and there was no problems on hers. No issue. No docked pay.

    Yes, of course "in London use alternative route" - right, when the whole station is evacuated and several stations along the same line closed with all people trying to cram on tiny buses as an "alternative" to get to other lines, cab office has 45 minutes wait time - yeah... easyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

    The odd occasion is fine and most employers will be reasonable about dealing with it but ultimately its not your employers problem how you get to work and if you are constantly late for whatever reason expect to be dealt with
    Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked

    I have never worked anywhere where being late because of transport problems was an issue. Everyone knows when there is an issue with London transport and knows who is commuting from where so no surprises and no comments on that - just normal human treatment both ways.

    Of course there are some unreasonable idiots - heard of one "manager" who purposely scheduled interviews on a day when there was a tube strike. His reasoning was - "want to see how much someone wants this job". Idiot. Nobody turned up. Lucky for them as he was/is a proper !!!! and do not wish my worst enemy to work "for" him,.

    Are you sure it's a fine ?
    You're employer may have some sort of rule saying anyone late cannot start work until 10am or after lunch or whatever.

    Seem to remember this is covered in old slavery legalisation somewhere that fines in themselves are unlawful.
    Deductions are legal if they are contractual and docking for time not worked, but a one off fine of £10, sounds fishy.
    Needs more investigation.

    depends on the severity of the transport problems at the end of the day, twice a month lateness...probably ok, twice a week regularly...not so.

    Some live to work, some work to live.

    Personally if transport is down, I am not going to kill myself trying to jump and fly - I send and sms to wherever I work at the time notifying them I will be late and why and never had/have issues. Then I get in whenever I can transport permitting. And everywhere I worked was like that - for everyone.

    I really could not work anywhere worrying about petty stuff all the time. Life is too short for p[pettiness.

    Where I used to work if you were up to 15 minutes late, they docked that amount in pay. Also docked it by 15 minutes increments the later you were late.So if 43 minutes late you got docked 45 minutes.

    But it also got put down as a late arrival. Then when you had more than a certain number of 'lates' over period, you were asked into the office for a formal chat.;)

    If you were constantly late, it went through up to 3 written warnings then dismissal if it got really bad.:(

    So really they did everything in my opinion to get you out of the habit of being late.

    I think £10 is a bit steep.

    But it seems to have got the attention the boss was after.:D
