That looks like you were quite lucky there wasn't more damage Maggie - although it would have been lucky not to have any at all.

The dents in the grass shows you how lethal these things can be - you wouldn't want to be out when all of that is flying around.

We once had a green house that exploded in gales and the shards of glass were embedded everywhere and the frame ended up 1/4 mile away on the golf course. We seem to have got of lightly here so far. The trees are all looking rather magnificent with the yellow & green leaves and some with the dark red. It's so much colder though.
We haven't had a summer here at all but it's nice when we get a dry day like yesterday - been unusual not to have torrential rain at least twice a day.
Little Orp went in with the older girls so that is good. I thought they would be gone.

Good news about your hen, choille:j, and fingers crossed for Duck, maggie. It's going to be a wild weekend.

Tonight, in the field beyond Horse Woman's land, the contractors are still madly cutting the maize in the rain. I've never seen them do that before, or this early. Usually it's November. Do they think it'll be flattened, I wonder?

Just about recovered from Wednesday, when we had 22 people from the village here for a lunch to say "thank you" for all their kindnesses over the years of our renovations. It was good to acknowledge the great support and friendship they give, but the logistics were a little daunting. We're still eating the surplus!

We have a new guest here. So far he's behaved himself, which is more than can be said for his mate down on Pete's land, which has knocked both Pete and his assistant down on more than one occasion!._pale_

How good of you to invite so many for lunch.

Hope the gales don't cause too much damage.

Had words with an estate agent who has put up an advertising hording on grazing ground. I asked them to remove it as they didn't have permission and just got the run around. Funny guy - it wasn't to advertise a house for sale. It was to direct people to their website where nothing here is for sale but they invite you to join a franchise. They'd put it near a For Sale sign that had permission to be there - that house is sold & I wish they'd take that sign down now- but the way this new sign is worded (Amazing Results) it's as if they've sold it - it's quite sharp practice really. The guy threatened me with the police if I take the sign down and came over all bully boy - not what I expected in the Far North but they are based in Edinburgh.
I hate signs in the middle of no where especially garish ones that don't benefit the local community - just an eye sore.
    Whinge over.

    hello peeps

well the winds picking up and blowing a hooley ...then suddenly very still for 5 minutes... then off it goes again ! going to get worse as the day goes on apparently
im sure elsewhere may get it a lot worse, but on "the weather map" we are in direct line :(

tilly , my mare [the one hopefully in foal] had to have the vet yesterday as she was very stiff walking and lethargic.. my first panic is acorn poisoning, although ive been paranoid they don't get near them ! and it kills them , no cure just luck.
thankfully its not [99%] and we think where she had a mad bolt round the field on Tuesday ,that she has just pulled ligaments.. or that [if] the foal has moved and cramped a nerve?? either way , I tried stabling her but she went mental, sweating so much that she risked colic! so turned her out into the corall which has a shelter. she can see the others over the gate .. then I noticed storm [hoss] had a swollen "you know what"... so got him in and had the enviable task of swishing a bucket full of warm soapy water up in "there"... marigolds came in handy there !! so he is in with tilly [its like holby city a&e !!] if its not gone down by Monday then another vet visit to give him a sedative so "it" comes out and can be checked...
I did wait till nobody is eating hopefully when you read this scintillating piece of info :rotfl:

son is off to BALI on Tuesday and to say im jealous is an understatement !!
relationship has nose dived big time so hes "getting away"...

I have been doing an extra job of change over for holiday house [owners house but he's away a lot so lets it out in between] NOW the annex is up and running.. AND bookings are coming in fast and thick !! didn't anticipate SO much extra work , money is handy but its a LOT to do ! may need to reconsider :o
house is a 5 bedroom, 3 bathroomed big house 3-4k a WEEK
    annex is a 1d &2s smallish but nice @ 1-2k a WEEK !!!!!

jeese I could go round the world for a week in the house !!

ive just watched my garden umbrella take off like a javelin across the lawn into the field :rotfl:

Sheep are all looking really well. Ewes are on the hill resting the inby ground for Winter. They were late getting their jackets off due to the torrential rain but they are all looking very smart and shiny black.
    I must advertise the tups.

The house to clean sounds a big job - I couldn't clean that size of house on my own as with beds to make up and you have to make sure they are immaculate - you just couldn't clean it on your own.

Been a really lovely day so down the beach with pup pup who loves to run and meet other dogs but sometimes they don't like him as much as he likes them.

Your son has some stonking hols - lucky devil.

    :rotfl:That's why I was confused!

Still blowing here, although nothing exceptional. I think the worst rain also went north and south of us, as usual. It's too early to say if it will affect our digger plans for next week. We drain down fast. :D

Apart from Mr Texel and his North Country Mules, Pete brought up another 18 random lambs to graze Horse Woman's field, so I have those to watch over now. Unlike me, they need a small amount of extra feed every day to build them up a bit.

There's only one thing to do with a illegal sign board in the wrong place choille....and it involves a chain saw! Here, the sale boards for houses frequently vanish overnight or 'fall down,' because the thick person who erects them will stick them where it blocks the view at our road junction. Horse Woman's house for sale sign was the last to vanish, but I see it's back again now, not that it'll make any difference till they drop the price some more. :(

The contractors cleared the entire maize field next to Horse Woman's in the dark and rain last night. Not one stem there this morning!

in this area [the beaulieu estate] you are not allowed FOR SALE signs . HE wont 'av it... ruins the look of the village.. no garish shop signs and even fencing is governed, colour of wood stain, house signs etc. NO unattractive double glazing units on lots of visible houses.
must admit it stops that touristy look and keeps the old buildings looking good.
im alright cos im up a track [got DG ]

well storm BRIAN ? was a bit of a damp squib as it turns out, whilst we had high winds [lost the felt of the chalet that houses my owl] it could have been a lot worse.. calm today.

choille... yes nipper does choose some exotic destinations ! does it on a shoe string but has fun..
ive always encouraged him to go to more obscure destinations than Benidorm ;) like I did in my 'yoof :)
I do get a friend to help me on the BIG changeover days in the holiday lets or I definitely wouldn't be physically able !!

horses both seem to be a tad better today so fingers crossed..:o
