Well, I've now had a training session in how to use a Brushcutter.

Went to a different charity's workday - as soon as I got on site, I was asked my shoe size and provided with proper work boots, hard hat, ear defenders, full visor, anti vibration gloves - and told 'you'll be needing this before you start, too', chucking me a brand new bottle of factor 30 sunblock, informed about the cases they've had of Lyme onsite this year, so all bites have to be checked out in case they need to remove and keep the assailant for analysis, told to take as many breaks as I wanted - and informed me that after I completed the training, I'd have my own book to double up on their records of exactly how many minutes on each item of equipment I'd completed. I didn't just get trained in how to operate the thing, I had a full explanation of the safety checks, the labels, the different blades and where to be in relation to other people or another operator. And they stayed clearing the debris so I was never left alone or had to deal with everything myself.

Compared to last week's group, I'm a lot more impressed with this organisation. I certainly felt safer compared to amongst the laurel hackers. And they said that if I decide to continue, they'll happily find out who to contact/recommend in Devon/Cornwall if I'm looking to get a proper paid job. Whilst handing me an expenses form to claim my bus fare and lunch costs back.

If I go out with the other group tomorrow, it'll be more pulling Ragwort in the rain. Or I could go with this lot on Friday/Sunday/Tuesday, whatever I want.

Hmmm. I'll see how I feel later. Or whether it rains tonight.

That sounds like a cracking day, which organisation is it?

Yes, sorry you've had the ferret move, or ferret house move - goodness - you will be bushed.
Could have been worse, but the sat nav packed-up and they've moved house since I last visited! Got us to Aldi and then radioed for assistance. I was only a mile out! :rotfl:

One of the Wildlife Trusts, Chesapeake. I felt it was far more professional in outlook/attitude, even if you take away the additional equipment.

And I have to admit, I appreciated the 'go and have a break now, we've cut and put those logs over there especially to have something to sit on, so there's no excuse', compared to the 'we never let people sit down because they don't like getting up again' as well. I definitely don't think I should have to refuse to continue working because the other volunteers were making me feel unsafe - which is what happened with the other organisation. Which is a shame.

Goodness - they look a little like Pine Martens with the colouring.

    Beautiful creatures.

Of course! Leycesteria formosa. That will take any old nonsense.

Feet up. :D All I needed was tea!
Horrendous rain on the way back, fortunately only from Taunton.

Freddie doesn't look too naughty to me! :)

Many thanks Dave _ I would never have remembered that.

    Heavy mixed weather here too.
  • I was bored last night, so went to bed early. Himself brought me a warm cocoa (don't do hot chocolate, as it's got milk powder in it) and, despite never, ever sleeping properly, I was out like a light.

Woke up this morning, listened briefly to the sounds of the rain, drizzle and mizzle outside and decided, as my waterproof boots/coat hasn't been delivered yet, I'm not Ragworting today. As I [strike]struggled[/strike] got up to make coffee, the clunking noises from my hips made Himself laugh and say 'I think you made the right choice'.

I do think it's making a difference, though - I am so hungry on the days where I'm doing stuff, and Sunday saw me practically possessed by an overwhelming need to eat vast amounts of roast chicken and spuds - but Himself still reckons I'm, in his words 'definitely getting narrower'.And there was me thinking that my clothes were somehow stretching in the wash. Is it normal to be that hungry when you're outside for such a short time?

If I do anything today, other than retrieve the courgettes that are finally growing in the garden for chilli tonight, I'll go swimming. At least the water there is warm.

Ds1 has disappeared north to give those woolie beasts a haircut. DD2 has disappeared down south to visit the capital.

I've just had to rescue OH as he came off worst with an iron bar and a stubborn nut. The bar won and I had to take him to A&E. He's had his head glued but I've forbidden him from working tomorrow. Today I also rescued a hedgehog that was wondering around in the daytime. DD1 had to take him to the vets as I was taking OH to the hospital. Hedgehog has been kept in as he has an infection and they'll need to lance it.

Had a trip away to Oban with the girls and a friend. It was so good booked another weekend for us all to go and play in October.

The grass appears to have taken on the lawn but will need a spray to get rid of the weeds.

We have puppies and they are 6 weeks old Still got 2 boys to sell. They are little devils to keep in their pen.

I hope Mr Lucielle is okay. Sounds nasty. Oban is good.

Hopefully we get our sheep sheared next week - they need their jackets off.

Found a dead Orp chick this afternoon - I don't know why it died - no injuries, just died. It was really a handsome fellow - just thinking of advertising him.

Went to Inverewe gardens last night - forgot what a fabulous place we have almost on our doorstep. Hadn't been for a very long time it's changed a lot so that was very interesting. They have loads of South African plants now & palms. They have stuff in them gardens I ain't never seen before. So they do.
There is a ghostly looking budlehia - all silver grey & white - looked very striking in the glooming. I will post photos on my blog, but the budlieha [sp?] won't come out right. Loads of midnight blue agapanthius planted next to dark red stuff =- stunning. I must go in the daytime - instead of sneaking in at night...................
