I managed to get my dahlias sorted on Saturday so that felt an achievement. This week has been cold, wet and light has barely shown itself. It's been pitch black by 445pm every day. I think I might turn to garden planning mode soon lol. The greenhouse remains uncleaned...oops

My dahlias are still in the ground. :o

Mr Dog must've had so much fun last week, digging up his yard, he's doing it again this morning!

Whatever it was he did, maybe didn't work in the torrential rains last weekend.....:(

I'm beginning to feel sorry for him, but only a bit!

So are mine Dave as they're not special ones I've been leaving them, cutting back and adding a thick mulch. They've survived the last 2 years so fingers crossed!

I'm going to leave some of ours in the ground, but I have special ones that I grew from seed which can't be easily repeated and those will be buried in their pots in a frost-free bin.

More plastering of the living room today.... Mr R had TB testing results yesterday (well, not him, his cattle!) and they were all clear.:j

So glad the conservatory people are late, as I still havent filled-up the soakaway next to it or got the last drain feed pipe in. :o I'm going around picking-up all the major rubble and stones as it's a good time to get rid. :)

    hi all...
ive had a busy week but just work rather than "play" !!

the fish have all settled in but this morning I spotted a heron flying up from behind the tree line and thought "oh sh*t" !! raced down to pond and sure enough the boogar had had 3 fish [the larger goldfish not the koi tho...] so my day started hijacking the workmen off the farmhouse roof to help me put posts around pond and net it [having dashed to moles for netting ] only to find the net was NOT what it said on the packaging and a handkerchief would have done better.... so I hauled out an old net I had almost dumped and put over as a temp fix... herons have a habit of stabbing/injuring but not able to follow through and actually catch the fish ! so tomorrow is find a new net the right size day !!
I was going to visit dad but as I was about to set off [delayed] this afternoon, mum rang and sounded dreadfull ! she has almost lost her voice /sore throat so I shot over there instead with honey !
then I took friends 2 cats for pre op examination before they are neutered next week ...
so today has NOT been a day off as planned !!

its bright sun here but a chilly, sometimes mega strong winds ..

    stay safe peeps xx

Isn't the best way to keep a heron out of a pond to put a wire around the perimeter? I was once told that herons need to walk into the water, not just land in it, so if there's a wire in the way, they can't. :p

Probably an old wives' tale! :rotfl:

Very 'Aaaarrrgggghhh!' day today. :( Mr Rod suddenly decided he needed 5 litres of PVA, so I had to make an emergency dash to the builders' merchant 12 miles away......:silenced:

While I was out, our builder popped-by and reminded everyone the open sockets in the living room are in fact live, so slopping wet plaster and gunge around them with a metal trowel probably wasn't a great idea! :o Cue much taping-up and covering.

As I returned, DW passed me on her way to collect the slate hearth which I was supposed to fetch. She'd just covered the whole living room floor in old polytunnel plastic after I'd cut 10cm of carpet away from all the edges, because it's unlikely we'll get another carpet or other floor covering before New Year, but we might get some skirtings.:D

DW returned with the hearth. Mr Rod slopped PVA all over the ceiling, having already turned the walls a fetching shade of green with a prep gunge called 'Bond It.' He then explained that as his tall friend wasn't answering his 'phone, he'd have to build a big platform in the living room to skim the ceiling on Monday.....Did we have six 8'x4' sheets of OSB?

    Well, of course! :rotfl:

We didn't laugh for long. I took the back part of the hearth out of the car and immediately noticed it was turning itself into roofing slates as it dried, the first layer peeling away in minutes.

"Ah, yes, it does that, sometimes," said the nice man on the 'phone.:(

Luckily, we tried it for size, and it was a fraction too large, so the replacement will be a few mm smaller. ;)

The Met says it'll be nice on Monday. I hope so. The sofas etc have to go outside while Mr Rod and the builder do their worst!:undecided

In other news, a little bird tells me that the digging up at the Dog End is council-led this week, involving a new storm drain, which should take water from the roadway in times of extreme weather. It's a fail-safe for when the other drains/gullies are overwhelmed.

Of course, it would be good if the local large land-owner didn't have his contractors ploughing across the contours nearby, creating hundreds of channels, down which water flows readily to the roadway. Without that 'help' there might not be a need for a new drain at all.

It didn't ping back to me.

Will wait and send again if the above was wrong. You can email me if you prefer; then I'll know which of your addys to use.
