This is a nice operating system. Cannot see how they can charge for it. The apps have too much competition with the Play store & Amazon.

Based on a phone OS I agree, for those who use desktops or laptops never in a million years.

In the file list there is "Windows.old" so I would imagine it's easy to get back to 8.1 if necessary.

They say that in order to get back to your old OS you will need the old OS disk. From experience you might be stuck with the new OS without the requisite disk. That's why I did a clean install on a vacant machine.

Why have they missed out Windows 9 ?
There's some kind of official view here:

It's not exactly what you'd call watertight logic though.

    Yep, I reckon so.

Strange to get things free from Microsoft but Win 10 Beta is at the moment.
I have just installed it on an old MSi U100. It used to run XP, then I put Linux on it (Cruchbang), but as I use Crunchbang on an Eee901 the U100 was available again.
You sign up to the developers site on Microsoft .com. You can then download approximately 3gb (32 bit for my old machine) & take note of the free product key.
Burn the files downloaded to a DVD iso using the free ashampoo software & then boot it up. Best to run the Win 8 Upgrade Installer first to see if your hardware is up to the job.
The MSI series run a screen resolution of 1024*600 which stops the app's from being opened. There are no appropriate drivers available.
The way around this is to run regedit & search 'Display1_DownScalingSupported'. Modify the file info from '0' to '1'. Press F3 to do the same to any other registry files, there was only one file that I had to change.
Well, I thought after rebooting & changing the resolution to 1024*768 that the result would be dreadful, but alas no, it is very acceptable.
With this resolution you can open the app's & access the MS store.
I never tried Win 8 but this Win 10 is rather good being free of course.
I use Linux a fair bit now but variety is always nice especially if there are no potential virus problems.

(Just seen the thread on Win 10 below)

Which BIOS version are you running?
  • It's an Advent 4211 which is the PC which can be turned into a Hackintosh.
I basically just wanted the Win 10 iso on disk for future use but it's nice having access to the MS store.
The bios is American Megatrends (2007) 1:23:1109.

I don't recognise that version numbering.

Dixons original was 1.10a and MSI goes to n011_10g

Are you sure that it is a 9?
  • Yes it is.

    Yes it is.

Ordinarily, I would suggest that you update the firmware to MSI Wind u100 version n011_10f.
Have you ever updated the BIOS firmware?

Ok, it makes sense now. The Dixons BIOS versions go from 1.08 to 1.09 to 1.10a... So yours is 1.09.
  • Thanks for all your advice Nifty.
Funny as it is, I have another Advent 4211 in a box waiting to be got going. It was a cheap buy which I am fixing with spare parts. That came with a full win 7 version useful for upgrading.
Got Win 7 starter on a U135 & a U180. Starter is quite a decent OS, depending on what you want.

I have the 64bit version running on a VM.
No problems so far, but not really explored it, just glad it's up and running.
1st impression is that it combines the best bits of Windows 7 and 8.

Host pc is nothing special, Pentium E6300 with 4GB RAM.

As to the naming, I read that it was going to be Windows 1, referring to One platform for pc, tablet and phone.
    Move along, nothing to see.
