Strange to get things free from Microsoft but Win 10 Beta is at the moment.
I have just installed it on an old MSi U100. It used to run XP, then I put Linux on it (Cruchbang), but as I use Crunchbang on an Eee901 the U100 was available again.
You sign up to the developers site on Microsoft .com. You can then download approximately 3gb (32 bit for my old machine) & take note of the free product key.
Burn the files downloaded to a DVD iso using the free ashampoo software & then boot it up. Best to run the Win 8 Upgrade Installer first to see if your hardware is up to the job.
The MSI series run a screen resolution of 1024*600 which stops the app's from being opened. There are no appropriate drivers available.
The way around this is to run regedit & search 'Display1_DownScalingSupported'. Modify the file info from '0' to '1'. Press F3 to do the same to any other registry files, there was only one file that I had to change.
Well, I thought after rebooting & changing the resolution to 1024*768 that the result would be dreadful, but alas no, it is very acceptable.
With this resolution you can open the app's & access the MS store.
I never tried Win 8 but this Win 10 is rather good being free of course.
I use Linux a fair bit now but variety is always nice especially if there are no potential virus problems.
(Just seen the thread on Win 10 below)

It isn't obvious in the first couple of pages whether this will be software that continues working or if it will be time limited. Have you come across anything that makes this clear.0

From here:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/preview-faq#faq=tab1Technical Preview expires on April 15, 2015
If you’re running Technical Preview, we'll send you notifications beginning on April 1, 2015 to remind you that it’s time to upgrade your PC to a newer version.
(I agree it isn't obvious though.)0 -
Yes, enjoy it while you can. I would part with $10 come April but no more.
Then back to Android KitKat for PC. Hopefully the bugs will have been sorted out by then (Android). PC manufacturers are lining up to sell their machines with Android.
Did hear something about MS aiming to sell Win 10 for peanuts to Win 7 users.
There should be a hack by April 2015.
Apparently April 2015 is the date for a more complete beta version. Late 2015, perhaps Xmas 2015 for the official launch. Also talk about only charging OEM's for the product, not consumers.0 -
Why have they missed out Windows 9 ?0
-
I'd guess it's just for marketing reasons.0

This is a nice operating system. Cannot see how they can charge for it. The apps have too much competition with the Play store & Amazon.
Think MS will have taken on board that a lot of us do not expect to pay for software, donations to Linux developers excluded. Android is a Linux Distro to all effects.
The old machines have plenty of life left in them with these new OS's especially the netbooks of yesteryear.:j0 -
Looking good so far. Win 9 was ditched, MS say that going direct from 8.1 to 10 was to show it's a completely new OS. Let's see over the months how it goes and turns out pricewise. I actually copied over the ISO to an 8Gb flash drive and ran "Setup" as administrator. It was simple to do and thus far I'm quite impressed. In the file list there is "Windows.old" so I would imagine it's easy to get back to 8.1 if necessary. :cool:0
