I've no idea as to the legality, but my old job had this same rule - clock in early/out late, and you get nothing...clock in 3 mins late, or out 1 min early, and you lose 15mins pay!
Happily my new firm pay us by the minute, so whatever we work, we get paid :TMortgage - £[STRIKE]68,000 may 2014[/STRIKE] 45,680.0 -

It's more than one minute though. Unless you are working and then suddenly stop and scan out instantaneously its more than likely there will be a few minutes between you stopping work and scanning out.
15 minutes seems a sensible cushion.
We have two bells, one 5 mins before end of shift, when we can stop work, go and wash up and get our stuff together, then go and queue at the clock to wait for the end of shift bell.0 -

Surely the easiest way to deal with this problem would be to work the extra minute (your contracted hours) then they won't have the need to dock your pay by 15mins
If everyone who's employed by the company worked 1min less each day over a period of time this would add up to a lot of minutes owed to the company.0 -
I realise that, I just want to see it wrote down in black and white as lawful and not a breach of contract law. Many of us start our shifts early too. I'm not condoning people leaving early, i just want to know the hard facts on this for curiosity's sake.0

This is what I've found for starting late, I assume leaving early is covered in the same way. I'm probably sounding like I want to purposely cause trouble in my workplace but it really isn't like that. I don't appreciate threats (especially in the workplace) and if they are unlawful I'd like to address them.0 -
