abbey remote ISA problem

i have an abbey remote ISA (formerly safeway mini cash ISA). every year
i have put money in to my ISA from my bank account by simply making a call to safeway and subsequently abbey authorising them to take the payment. i have been doing this every year since i started my mini cash ISA in 2003 without a problem until i tried today. i have a confirmation/acknowledgement from safeway back in 2003 confirming that they had sent a direct debit for my ISA direct to my bank which states that the amount, payment date & future payments are at my request.
i was told that they have never been able to take money from another
bank on a persons say so plus suggested that i had made a mistake & that
on all previous occassions i had rang my bank to authorise the transfer which
i of course refuted. i tried to explain the acknowledgement letter i had back in 2003 but as you can imagine it fell on deaf ears.
has anyone else previously paid into cash ISA's like this in the past as
abbey are making out that i'm losing my marbles which i'm certainly not or
encountered a similar issue with abbey ?
thanks
