Basic bank account HSBC

Hi All,

I really could do with some advice and guidance, i am 18 years old and just opened up a new basic bank account with hsbc on monday just gone 29th sept, i got given my account number, sort code ect and a letter to confirm my account is now open, yesterday i received my debit card so i called hsbc to activate my card to then be told my account is now closed because i do not meet the banks criteria?!

i have checked my credit repport everything is okay apart from i am only 18, no previous credit history and i am NOT on the electoral on with i have applied for!

Could this make a difference atall as i was told hsbc do not do credit searches for my type of bank account?

Many Thanks

Banks can refuse any application for any reason. Sometimes their full checks are only completed after the account is open. I'd try a different bank, have you had any previous accounts before?

It was an account closure, not a refused application.
Account can be closed for any reason (or without any reason) too, but with ~2 month's notice as per the T&C.

I am not saying that it's worth fighting with the idiots and demanding anything from them. Just vote with your feet. Arrogant HSBC is the last bank I'd want to have an account with.
  • hi, do you think its is worth appealing for? i did have an account when i was 17 with lloyd but it got closed down due to myself not paying 29 pounds back for an over draft?

i fought my corner with lloyds because for one at 17 you do not get an over draft, i used the card in the shop to buy a top and went into overdraft as i assumed i had money in the account.

could it be because i am not on the electoral roll

You had no corner to fight for. You spent the money and had to pay it back. Being 17 meant that they just couldn't enforce the debt in a court.
Have you checked your credit files? If Lloyds reported a default, then electoral roll will make very little difference.
  • also i have tryed 3 other banks and they are not allowing me a bank account, i have applied for the electoral roll and i cant get put on the untill the 1 December, i feel asif im being categorized as fraudulent
  • yes checked credit report everything is perfect apart from my age, no credit history and electoral roll
  • As above check your credit report.

Fighting your corner with Lloyds may have stopped them recovering the money from you as you were 17 but they could still have registered a default against you!

I expect it is the contents of your credit file rather than not on the electoral roll that has spooked HSBC.

Stop applying for accounts, assess your credit file and try and resolve the issue with Lloyds.

Repaying the debt, apologising and grovelling may get you out of this mess.

    Good luck

With Experian, Equifax and Call Credit?

The issue may not be reported to each agency!

It may be a good idea for you to contact HSBC directly and ask if they will divulge their reasoning for closing your account. Once you know what their reason is you can then try and sort out any problem that has caused them to act as they have.
