ryanair droptest

having sworn never to fly Ryanair again due to previous experience I was horrified to discover that a short break to Majorca booked by friends of ours was flying Ryanair! On the outward flight only so many bags were allowed in the cabin and all others with a yellow label on were collected at the bottom of the steps and placed in the hold [as per Ryanair website] This was repeated again at Palma but this time we had a skybridge at the terminal so I was intrigued as to how this would work as we had the dreaded yellow label,as we approached the cabin door I was stunned to see people handing over their bags only for them to be dropped on to a trolley on the runway, a drop of probably at least 12 feet!!Whipped me duty free out sharpish and took it into cabin with me but can't see how luggage/contents would not be damaged by such shoddy handling?

While it seems like a pretty poor procedure why would anyone with any sense leave breakable objects in hand luggage that's being shifted to the hold anyway? Even if they treat it with kid gloves when taking it off you who knows what will happen to it after that, it could end up crushed under a pile of rigid suitcases once it's in the hold.

Typical baggage handlers, certainly not unique to Ryanair. Have to agree with agrinnall, you shouldn't even contemplate putting duty free in the hold.

Other than the (airport) baggage handling, was your horror allayed, did they get you from A to B as booked?

The baggage handlers are not Ryanair staff, they're employed by the airport or the handling agents.

There is no need to put your 'duty free' into your cabin bag as Ryanair now allow a second smaller bag which would be allowed into the cabin regardless.

One cabin bag weighing up to 10 kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, plus 1 small bag up to 35 x 20 x 20 cms may be carried per passenger*

it's ridiculous to suggest people shouldn't put alcohol in their hold luggage. We always used to being local alcohol back from Greece, Spain etc bought in the local shops rather than the overpriced bottles at duty-free. Unfortunately now we only take hand-luggage and are unable to.
Dropping luggage from the walkway is also absolutely ridiculous and if I had witnessed it I would have been writing to Ryanair to let them know.

Nobody has suggested that you shouldn't put alcohol in checked in hold luggage, although obviously there is still a risk of damage, but if you have a hard shell case or plenty of protection it should be fine.

What we are saying is that it's ridiculous to expect alcohol bought airside and placed in a carry on bag to be safe if that bag has to be put in the hold on boarding. It might be OK if the cabin bag is also a hard shell but many of us deliberately use a squashy bag so that there's a better chance of it fitting in the available space, and if for any reason it doesn't then any alcohol that isn't removed before the bag goes in the hold is at extreme risk of breakage, even if the bag isn't dropped on the tarmac.
