Only one of my children considered university and we put it to her. She could stay with us rent and board free. We would feed her for nothing but she would have to get a part time job to clothe herself and give her pocket money but the debt would be hers.

She chose not to go to university.

They are *loans* - where do you think the money will come from?

I think 15/16 is too young to decide what career path you want for the rest of your life. I did drama at college and uni. I never said I wanted to be famous or do films (we always used to joke that our ambition was to be on Hollyoaks) but I did want to do theatre or educational work. When I did the degree it made me not want to be an actor anymore but I wasn't going to waste more money on another degree so I left it. I now work in a completely unrelated industry that you can't do a degree in.

I didn't realise that you had left show business, it couldn't have been that long ago because you performed at the closing ceremony of the Scottish commonwealth games. I was only 1 year old when you had your breakthrough hit single 'shout'.

Actually I was wrong, I misread the info, the original version was released in 1959, your cover version was released in 1964 (so I was 6 years old, which explains why I can remember it).

I'm not surprised if you put it to her like that. Restricting her to whatever university was commutable and then making it sound negative.

I dearly hope for your sake that she doesn't resent you for that.

But it does exemplify the issues students face when parents are relied on for funding. Either directly or in their incomes being taken into account assuming some top up.

Not all parents give their adult children free reign to decide the future, not should they be expected to fork over money for what they see as a mistake.

Indeed it does but that's a separate issue.

Yes, but the extra money for these larger loans has to come from somewhere, no?

I thought this sounded reasonable TBH. Her daughter isn't restricted to commutable universities - presumably she could study anywhere but would then have to fund their own accommodation and living costs as many do. If their daughter was serious about going to university, I doubt if this suggestion would have put her off.
