I would exchange the minimum amount needed for when you get there and take sterling for the rest, you will usually get a better rate changing it once you arrive in Turkey.

Dependent on where your going in turkey, most tourist areas have ATM s which give you gb pounds at no charge, then exchange them locally for lira.
You'll get a much better rate than you can get in the uk. I wouldn't take any lira with me at all just my debit card.
  • Thanks all no euros minimum lira and take debit card !

Just follow the usual advice for almost all countries - get a fee-free card (e.g. Halifax Clarity) and use it to withdraw local currency in ATMs.

Be careful using stand-alone ATMs. If it eats your card or dispenses the wrong amount, then you're up the creek.

It may depend where you're going - Kalkan is really expensive whilst I imagine the Syrian border is cheaper than chips at the moment.

Very regular visitor to Turkey and currently in Marmaris where most ATMs are charging 4% for each withdrawal

Sample prices beer 10TL, soft drink 3TL meals - cheap to eye watering:eek:

Is this the ATM charging the 4%, or your bank? Which card are you using? Which bank operates the ATMs?
