Returning/exchanging a mattress

could anyone here tell me my rights in regard to returning or exchanging a mattress. I went into our local retailer on Thurs and tried a couple of mattresses and ordered a new divan with the mattress I choose. I received the delivery next day. After a couple of nights it's blatantly obvious the mattress is way to hard for me. It felt completely different and much softer in the shop but this one feels like I'm laying on concrete, I'm so sore my back is really bad and just cannot get to sleep..

The website states that the company will accept returns however they must be in original packing. The delivery guys took the packing when they put the bed together so no chance of that.

The T&C's on the back of the receipt states items are non returnable once delivered unless they are faulty or misdescribed. I'm not sure if the mattress falls into the misdescribed category.

I paid a lot of money for the mattress and now feel like I may have thrown it down the drain.

If anyone has had a similar experience I'd love to know what happened. In the meantime I'm off to sleep on the sofa.

In what way was it mis described?
  • Mattresses do soften over time. Is there a small child you could get to jump on it enthusiastically?

The display mattress has probably been tested hundreds of times and will have softened.
I always hate a new mattress as they are like lying on concrete but they do get better.

What base was under the one you tried in the shop? If it was on sprung slats it would feel softer than on a divan base. Also as has already been said mattresses soften with use so it may just need wearing in and will eventually feel like the one in the shop.

Mattresses really don't soften that much over time, this is a myth.

If you have a mattress that is different from the one you purchased then you have the right to reject the goods.

If it's a case of it's not the right mattress for you then there is little you can do as you've slept on it.

Has anyone from the store been out to inspect it?

Like Fosterdog said do you have it on the same type of base as instore? Bear in mind that some divan bases have springs in the top of them.

Dreams ask you to try it for 30 days (i think) then if not right ,will take it back , seems strange a rival wouldnt offer the same
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
  • Ikea allow 90 days for return as long as it's not dirty, marked or damaged and state
Please note that initially your new mattress can seem a bit too firm. Allow at least one month for your body to get used to the mattress and for the mattress to get used to your body. To get the best comfort you also need the right pillow. Make sure you have a pillow that suits you and your new mattress.

    Seems a sensible policy.

    Not true at all.

I bought a mattress just under 2 years ago, and it was perfect. Now it it's way too soft and it's almost intolerable.

Granted, it might be a longer time scale than we are talking about here, but still it has softened significantly over time.
