Homeless Dept (Enfield) Video

Found this today.., really our country is falling apart.

http://www.theguardian.com/cities/video/2014/sep/01/london-housing-crisis-emergency-enfield-video

So depressing. Particularly as I am being messed around by a private LL who is wanting to sell the house I am renting (don't live in Enfield though). Not asking for help on that issue.., just sick of the way people on benefits are stuck in bad private rentals with few options and there always seems to be a rule that means the local housing department can't /won't help.

  • Indeed dean:

This largely started with Thatcher's selling off of council houses for discount to bribe the bribed to vote Tory.

Dave's Localism Act 2011 further means that if someone is homeless and the council have offered an at-least-12-months private AST that tenant rejects the the council has "fulfilled it's housing duty" and need provide no further housing or advice.

"No one care about my family" says the third person in the video. Well you know what love, don't move to the most expensive city in the world and expect everyone else to keep you.
  • Enfield has become the dumping ground for families being moved out of more expensive boroughs due to cuts. The borough just can't cope with the influx of people. I've lived in Enfield since 1976 and we've reached breaking point with the number of people pouring into the borough. All our services are reaching breaking point and on top of that they've closed the A&E dept. of our local hospital.

Er, no - if there was a large sum paid in HB/LHA it went to the landlord... perhaps via tenant, but landlord benefits by taxpayer bungs

OK, taxpayers spent £143,000 in one year to pay for housing benefit for one family.

But the tiny number of families that get horrific sums spent on them get a disproportionate amount of media attention.

Most new HB claims are submitted by those in employment...
  • I thought fatty Pickles & IDS had claimed to have stopped those huge HB claims with their benefit cap ??

They had, that was in 2009. The cap should be closer to min wage though. Not average age.

    I couldn't agree more!

People have become too dependent on the state and seem perfectly happy to mass produce children without the means to support themselves.

I do love lines like this. It implies that no-one will ever lose their job, become injured or disabled, seperate from a partner through death or choice and a million other things that make up the rich tapestry of human existence.

If it were simple we would have found a perfect solution to benefits (mostly paid to workers and pensioners) by now. As such it's reasonable to accept it isn't simple, which in turn implies that you might be missing something.
