Pollyanna24 - Just wanted to add Iams was the dry food that our cat was eating when she got fat, she absolutely LOVES Iams and would eat tons of it - then demand more when it was gone, it does seem to be the best brand you can buy at the supermarket but I have heard of other cats getting fat while on Iams, we didn't try Iams light so I don't know if its any good.

Now they are eating this other food and I give them food whenever they ask, and our previous fat cat is a good weight again.

lindens - I think I would go for a good quality hairball food to start with, see if the better quality food helps with the weight problem by itself (like it did with ours), if it doesn't go onto light food instead, or I think you can add a little olive oil to cat food to help with hairballs.

Its the supermarket shop today so I think I will try the hairball IAMS or similar make (not supermarket lol) and hope that the better quality is better for them and does the trick.

Once again I have to recommend Burns. Formulated to deal with fur balls as well as being a food that really does keep the weight down, the coats in good condition - plus the added benefits of not being tested on animals the same way as IAMs (burns only taste test i believe - not vivisection)

I really wouldn't worry about calorie counting for your cat. Just make sure that they're on a high quality food (such as Burns) with a decent meat content, rather than just being 90% grains, and monitor the feed intake. Also make sure that your cat is active, and you shouldn't have a problem. There's no need to pay extra for equally poor quality food that are 'lite' or 'low calorie'.

When my cats seemed to be putting on too much weight with Iams, I switched to Purina One. Iams seems quite oily and you only need to feed small portions. My cats were always clamouring for more!
I can feed them quite large quantities of Purina, which fill their tums without adding lots of weight.
As the weather is getting colder, I'm mixing Purina and Iams for the ones that sleep on an unheated conservatory. They have cat igloos, but burn up calories keeping warm.

Oops, really didn't know this. I have tried putting less in her bowl over the last few days, hey if I'm at work when she's yelling for more, I cant hear her right?!

I also give her Sheba . She kept trying to eat the dog's Pedigree in Gravy, so I thought maybe she wanted something wet now and again.

Now I just realise that I'm a soft touch.

Hello,

One of my cats has been ill recenlty and due to a change required in his diet I am going to have to change what I feed them all. Therefore the number of tins of food I need to buy for them will need to increase from about 30 per month to around 150. This couldn't have come at a worse time for us as I am due to have a baby in 3 weeks and I have just started my maternity leave so I really need to find the cheapest way to buy their tinned food. At the moment I buy the tesco own brand tine, kitekat and katkins (which all seem to be the cheapest in tesco). Does anyone know of anywhere that I may be able to get them cheaper?
I am wondering whether the only things you could bulk buy would be things like whiskas which are reasonably more expensive therefore wouldn't actually save me any money.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Have a look at Zooplus, https://www.zooplus.co.uk they are based in Germany but the site is all in English. Delivery is free when you spend over £29 otherwise it's just £2.90 (they deliver with DHL or Parcelforce). They were also doing 10% of your first order though not sure if that offer is still on.

They've got a really good selection of wet food, there's UK brands like Felix which is 53p per can - 6 for £3.20 (don't know if that's good as don't buy cans?) and there are also some 'foreign' brands which are really good value for money...
