1. Drink beer
2. Eat chips with mayo
3. Buy and eat chocolate
4. Repeat the above.
Now I like all these things so I don't mind Belgium. Ostende and Blankenberge on the coast are also ok places to do these things next to the sea.
I prefer Ghent over Bruges as it's not as busy. Park at the park and ride next to Ikea. The branch of Hema there has a good cafe overlooking the main square. In Bruges park in the station car park.
There is a giant Carrefour in North Bruges, towards Zeebrugge that I like. Not particularly cheap but I like foreign supermarkets and it stocks different stuff to the Calais branch. There is also a Albert Heijn in Bruges which is a dutch supermarket and is good for frietsaus (like mayo) and curry ketchup!0 -
When I lived nearby in north west Germany the only reason to go to Belgium was for the Sunday market in Liege:

The Spa Francorchamps circuit is one of the greatest remaining F1 venues, and you can drive your own car round it!

That looks brilliant, unfortunately we won't be there for one of the open days. Maybe another time though. Spa is one of my favourite tracks....0 -
B-Park in Brugge has a big carrefour supermarket(if you look at their website you can find the nearest to you). If you can try and go in a colyrot as they give out lots of free samples. Also a trip to Ostende and walk along the front is ok,town has gone down hill abit over the years but still worth a few hours walking around. Also go out by the airport both sides of airport are two out of town shopping areas.0

The comic book museum is Brussels is pretty good. And a discount for EU member citizens if I remember correctly0

Another vote for Ypres and Bruges
Lille is a lovely city and only just over the border to the south (would suggest train tho; the public transport there is good)0 -

"...without driving all the way to Brussels,"
