How an individual chooses to comp is up to them. Personally end date comping has always suited my busy lifestyle.
Indeed it is but the board does not have to revolve around their bad choices/inability to follow the guidelines.
There are far more potential advantages to not comping by end date than there are by doing so which have been listed before.0 -
I rarely comp by end date but yesterday (I can really pick my day can't I?) I decided to for a change, it was fairly late on in the day and I had probably done most of them already but then the moment I started whoosh they were all gone. I was I admit somewhat confused by it all...0

Found it .If a competition is properly run it makes no difference when you enter.
When it comes down to the best way to enter it has to be enter early - stay away from end dating as the advantages are almost none and the risks of missing out are many -
Comp closes early (or just sometime before midnight on the final day)
Comp website has problems (even worse if it's a weekend)
MSE forum goes down
Your broadband and or computer/laptop etc go down
Real life events take out comping time
Also unless you use the subforums you will miss out on the enter early ones where you get included in draws from the day/week of entry up to the competition end date.
The only possible advantage to end dating that I can think of is that someone posted about poorly run twitter competitions being more likely to pick later entries.
By entering early the comps closing early are not a problem and there is more time to overcome all the other issues above.
(Early entry would be after the post has been up a little while so if there are any problems they will have been noticed - self-promo/spam sites/wrong answer etc unless you are happy to check things like that out yourself)
If you do daily comps where nothing changes then bookmark them direct so you don't need to go through the forum to enter (it's a way to go now but the same applies for most advents) cuts down entry time and it doesn't matter if mse goes off-line.
Another disadvantage to entering by end date are the large peaks in the number of competitions that close on Fridays and on the last day of a month (There will be a huge number of competitions ending on Fri 31st Jan). Entry closer to when they are added gives a more even number to enter and allows more time to deal with any peaks that might arise.0 -

They weren't actually gone though, were they? They were merely resting in Game Over. So, I guess you went to Game Over and comped from there.0 -
Comping by end date is a minefield, Especially on the actual close date, why waste hours entering comps that might have already closed? That's just wasted time and energy. How on earth do you do it on end of month?
I try to be around two days before a competition ends but sometimes like yesterday I'm behind with them. Competitions via twitter and Facebook I enter on the day they end, I can then see over next couple of days if they've chosen a winner then I unlike/unfollow the company (please don't comment regarding this it's what I've always done and will do)quite a few companies post competitions on Fridays via social media that end that day. Some of them finish at midnight some at 5-6pm. Regarding those finishing on last day of the month I'm normally three days behind so by the day I've only got a few to do.
I had the impression that if five? people clicked on expired then the thread was automatically moved to GO?
I know there is a thread in compers chat called "let's make the comps board tidy" (or similar title) why not make this a sticky or have a sticky thread where people post those competitions that have finished? This would save time for the BG's0 -

No I didn't, as I said I rarely comp that way so I had no idea where they had gone to - and I'm certainly not getting pulled into this conversation any further...0 -

Well there are guides on this forum explaining where competitions go to when they have ended - I certainly know if I want to chase last minute comps, where to find them.
SO, if people spend alot of time creating stickies and ensuring 'newbies' undersand this, why should the board guides be taking so much grief?!
Perhaps reading stickies and winding necks in before posting would be the answer? Just a thought....:cool:0 -
I'm more shocked nobody's commented on the fact the title says G our and not Game Over.0

The only reason discussions like this get so out of hand, so quickly is because typed communication is a poor medium for sorting out differences. I truly believe that nobody who has posted here intended anything negative. This even includes the sweary post, although I can understand why Glad took offence at that and reported it. She is entitled to report any post she wants to, the same as the rest of us. And to not report any post that she doesn’t want to for that matter.
It’s just one of those things that blows up from nothing, when a great bunch of people fire off a few miscommunications.
My final point is that showing appreciation for Glad, or anyone, shouldn’t be seen as fawning or toadying. When people give their time freely to help others, they deserve a bit of support and appreciation. The forum would lose out lots if Glad decided to step down. Sure, someone else would step in to take her place, but that person would also make the odd blip. LOL, the only people who never make mistakes are those who do nothing.
Wish people would all metaphorically shake hands and move on now. If we can’t make peace on something as trivial as a competition forum, it doesn't leave much hope for sorting out the slightly bigger problems happening around the world.
