I'm wondering if Charities use chuggers as a way of getting fundraising costs off their books? Are they only counting income post chugging expenses?

Well we can't prove anything, it could be pure coincidence. But he's certainly learnt a lesson - having to contact the various companies involved and the police to get a crime reference number to give to those companies. Example, Vodaphone: 2 year contract at £50+ a month, my guess is they've handed out an iPhone without making adequate identity checks.

I would have still have dropped letter to the charity - not accusing them, just a 'FYI' type of letter.

It may be that they have had other letters from people in the same area who have been victims of identity fraud like your son.

You could put a sign up near your door that says you don't deal with uninvited callers and asking them not to knock - most will respect it and not knock. If some still do, open the door, point to the sign then close the door again...job done.

Many ignore the signs.....the last one to do that was last week just before 9pm.
One last month knocked - and his opening words were that he'd seen the sign but was he was a charity he knew it wouldn't apply to him <sigh>

  • Just walk up to your door, look at them through the window for about 30 secs then slowly turn around and walk away. Freaks them out.

You can add your own twist to this for added freak factor by coming to the door with an item like a shovel/lamp/video camera etc.
  • We don't get them often, but we had some a couple of months back that were trying it on at the wrong house. They told blatant lies about the charity's work and about charity finance. I told them they were wrong. They denied all knowledge.

I was so cross I emailed the charity concerned to complain. They were grateful to be told and immediately identified the people. They underwent retraining, I'm told. It's worrying how blatantly they'll lie though.
