How can I find info for an old capital one cc account?

Hi all, does anyone have any info or guidance on how I could find any old account info for a capital one credit card account that I had approx 10 years ago? I'm looking to see if I had any mid sold ppi or charges I could claim back but I have nothing stating any of my account details or even if I had ppi, i'm almost sure I did but don't know which route to go to find out, any help would be great :A thankyou

  • You can send the Bank a Subject Access Request (SAR) letter which will cost you £10. Alternatively, you could simply ring them up and ask them if you had PPI.

If you aren't even sure you had PPI, then on what basis are you going to complain about the sale of it?
  • Thankyou for that info :) and if I have paid ppi but wasn't aware of it, that is cause for complaint isn't it?
  • If you paid ppi, it would have been be itemised, separately on every monthly cc bill, so would be difficult to claim you didn't know?;)

This is about the size of it. I have seen any number of cases where people have gladly taken out the cover and simply forgotten about it.

To the OP, do as suggested and make a SAR. However, if they have no records and you have none it's game over. They may have destroyed them as they are required to do if they do not consider they are likely to have any further use for them.

Also, do note bank charges complaining is only likely to be effective if you can demonstrate serious financial hardship. It is not something the bank are obliged to consider any longer and not something FOS will consider as it has already been the subject of court judgement.

With credit card PPI it usually means you have just forgotten about the insurance and didn't bother to read your statements. PPI on credit cards is itemised each month on a separate line.

Of course, ten years on, it's even more likely you've forgotten and this isn't a valid mis-selling complaint I'm afraid. It's a myth sponsored by claim companies that PPI was routinely added without the knowledge and permission of the customer.

If I were you, I'd forget about any Bank charges from 10 years ago (they won't be recoverable) and simply ask the Bank if they have any record of PPI on your account. £10 for a SAR letter is likely to be a waste of money in your case.

The 'myth' is also sponsored by the FCA who state that adding PPI without your knowledge this is one of the 8 principle reasons for misale.

And prior to that the 'myth' found its way into lots of examples of the practice that were uncovered during mystery shopping exercises by FSA and Which?
  • I appreciate the helpful replies and thanked them, but I'm knew to these forums and have a old bank loan that i did pay ppi on and the one credit card that i asked about, Iwas just looking for abit of friendly advice to point me in the right direction, so a bit of slack would of been nice from the ones who can't help but reply with derogatory comments in an effort to make people feel stupid! Maybe I am, but that's the reason I was asking for advice! First time I've used one of these forums and more than likely the last!

I'm not sure I understand what's being explained on this reply though sorry, at the risk of sounding dumb again should I bother getting in touch with capital one or not?

Which post do you think did that?

Do you mean people signed a contract stating no PPI and then it appeared as a charge all the same? Or that Which found examples of PPI being "hidden" on a CC whereby the monthly charge was higher than the total debits with no explanation?

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
