  • May I ask an additional question here (I hope the answer will be helpful to the OP) - does anyone know the best place to get boxes for removals?

You redirect mail by paying a small fortune to the royal mail, I'm afraid - https://www.royalmail.com/personal/receiving-mail/redirection?PSID=Google&campaignid=RD0713_SM_25&keyword=post%20office%20mail%20forward&creative=27573235453
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • You can get boxes from Toys R Us if you are moving but I'm afraid I don't know how much they cost. We use a lot of boxes at work so we just took some of the unusable ones home (they had our suppliers logo on so they would have only gone in the recycling otherwise!)

We started packing as soon as we could. If it wasn't essential, we packed it up. This meant that the week leading up to moving day was only throwing the last few things in boxes, which worked really well for us.

Make sure you have a separate box with mugs, kettle, tea/coffee, sugar, toilet roll, kitchen roll and anti bacterial wipes in it. You will want these readily available on moving day!

Also, my brother found it useful to send the kids off to the grandparents for the day so that they were out of the way and looked after :)

    Hope this helps

Making your bed in the new home should be one of the first things you do. That way when you're exhausted from unpacking your bed is already made.

Ask at any supermarket - I got loads of boxes from Sainsburys.

My tip when moving from one property to another is - valium!
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
  • When we started clearing our house for moving we took a lot of things to the dump and whilst we were there the guys working there very kindly gave us some clean boxes from the recycling section at no cost.

freecycle.org to clear any clutter and get new stuff, or to ask for moving boxes

Also try out back of your local supermarket for boxes - long, flattish fruit boxes are perfect for books and DVDS and stack well.

http://www.iammoving.com/ has been a lifesaver for changing address - it has tickboxes for almost every back/retailer/service who might mail you and it will alert all of them. A mail redirect only works for a few months, but this will change your details with everyone.
  • you need more small boxes than you think. things like books become effectively a lump of wood when stacked, so you need to keep box size manageable.
  • log on to here to redirect your mail, taking into consideration that it takes 5 working days to set it all up:

pay for a removal firm to pack and move all your belongings, this was the best thing we did and took some of the stress of moving away. They came in the morning to start packing and were finished by lunchtime, went away, had lunch, and then we met them at the new house. At the new house they put all the boxes in the correct rooms and we unpacked.

If you are using a removal firm then they will be able to provide boxes for you. With mine, the way this worked was that I paid for the boxes but can return them for a refund once they are unpacked.

Woth my mover, I have up to 12 months to be able to return the boxes to get a refund. They will pick up free from my new home once, if I want to return them in stages that is OK but after the first pick up I either have to take the boxes in myself, or to pay them to pick them up.

I think the boxes cost me about £170 in total, of which I have had £90 refunded. I have a *lot* of books, though, which accounted for most of the boxes.

Try supermarkets for empty boxes - ones for things such as wine or olive oil are good, as they tend to be fairly strong and are small enough still to be lift-able when full.
