Student TV Licence

What's the best way for a student to deal with a TV licence (other than not getting one at all)? I looked at paying monthly then cancelling during the ninth month, but you have to pay the full amount in a six month period. I would imagine paying up front than asking for a refund would be troublesome to say the least.

There’s nothing like that last minute goal, the nail-biting season finale or your favourite Friday night sitcom to bring students together, laughing, crying and cheering over a laptop in halls.
But just remember, whatever you’re watching live online, you’ll need to be covered by a TV Licence – no matter what device you use. Your hall's licence won’t cover you, and you may not be covered by your parents’ licence. Thankfully, it’s easy to buy your own.
First, check below to find out if you need one. Then, buy a licence so you can be sure you’re enjoying all your favourite programmes legally from the day you start uni. Please let us know if you change address.
Pay in a way that suits you.
You can pay it all at once with your credit or debit card (£145.50 for colour) or spread the cost with Direct Debit or a cash payment card.
You may even be able to get a refund during the summer holidays, so you’ll only need to pay for the TV you watch for the rest of the year.

Yep, seen it. Have you ever read anything as patronising/arrogant/pompous in your life? may is to operative word there.0 -
The ultimate in moneysaving is to have no contact with TVL. Always worked for me and I get no threat (fret) letters anyway at the moment. Search for youtube videos taken of unwanted "visitors". Look up what a TVL178 form is - basically some people are stupid enough to sign a confession which is then taken to a magistrate. Don't reply to letters (they won't have your name), don't answer the door and admit you're the occupier. (I'm not telling you to watch TV without a licence).--Savings: £323k and counting...26/09/14 the day I reached 100k, 24/07/20 200k, 23/08/24 300k

Decided we will pay the parasites - it really grates to do so. However, we'll let the month tick over to October, then next June claim a quarterly refund. I suspect if we paid in September we would get no refund at all next June.0

The best way (and money saving way) is to not deal with them at all.0

When I was at uni we managed 4 years without a licence - then we got a knock on the door and the silly bint I was sharing with let in the TV Licence guy in as she was watching Richard & Judy. But as we only had a month left we never paid...then I moved into a flat on my own, lived there for 4 years and still no licence!! Only got one when I moved in with the now-wife, as she's scared she'll get sent to prison for watching Dog The Bounty Hunter with no licence. I give it 5 years, then I think its gonna be scrapped0
