Thank you all so much for your replies...I'm really in two minds now what to do. We move into the flat next weekend so I guess I should check out the walls first and then decide.
Thanks again,

Don't forget to ask around among friends and neighbours first if anyone has one you can borrow. The principal manufacturer is/was Earlex and they made millions of them, often for the big DIY chains such as B&Q, Wickes etc. Most folks can find someone who has one buried in the bowels of the shed or the garage and available for loan.
A couple of tips for using - you can cut down the steam producing time by filling the reservoir with hot water, always stand the unit on something (folded towels, thick newspaper) to protect the floor underneath from the heat and hang the steamplate out of the window for a moment or two if taking a tiny break, say to move the stepladder - saves turning the whole unit off and losing steam time). Hope that helps.0 -
The one I've hired held 7.5 litres, gives 95 minutes of stripping time and only cost £12.50 inc. VAT for the week. I'm glad I got it, 'cos there's about 10 layers of paper on the walls and the bottom layer seems to be stuck on with superglue!
I got it from here:

I'm sure it's supposed to cost more than £12.50, but I ain't complaining. :beer:0
