Tomato Cultivars For Next Year
Comments
-
Tomatoes - maskotka, gardeners delight, garden perle in baskets. Also sun baby yellow variety
Aubergines - not worth it, all flowers and leaves no fruit
Cucumber - still waiting for the one fruit to grow a bit more
Beetroot - cylindrical, two from a small row!0 -
Sungold is very good, but the tomato everyone seems to like best here is 'Floridity.'
Won the RHS taste trials too, I believe.

I've forgotten the variety of tomatoes I put in this year, I just have three at the end of the greenhouse. The only odd thing - to me anyway - may of the tomatoes split!? They may be the size of a golf ball but there's an inch long split in the skin - which if it's left too long gets mouldy. Anyone know why the 'split'?
Another odd thing - dwarf beans - same variety sow in the greenhouse, and outside. The greenhouse ones grow up a couple of feet - I have to stake them, while to outside ones are more normal - nine inch high bush! Anyone know why the difference?I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0 -
Tomatoes usually split due to uneven amounts of water being available to them. In other words, they are drying out too much between waterings.
Plants in a tunnel or greenhouse always grow larger than outdoors because conditions are more favourable. Yacon in the tunnel went to 10' last year, but outdoors it's more like 4'. Just as well; it would fall over in the first big wind if it grew tall outdoors.0 -
Another vote for Sungold from me; love the taste and with them being a small tomato they don't have so much of that squishy useless bit in the middle (terrible description, I know). I've grown both GD and Alicante this year, but next year will be just growing Alicante as the taste seemed better. I tried some black tomatoes and some stripey ones, but won't be growing them again. Hardly any fruit compared to my others. I'm also going to grow Red Alert again - a cherry sized red tomato that can be grown outdoors. I like the taste almost as much as Sungold. I experimented with Cucamelons this year, but was disappointed with the crop. Over the years I've tried various beefsteak toms, but have always found them lacking in flavour compared to smaller varieties.0

Sungold has been good for me again this year. Also like Golden Santa (small yellow plum). Both tend to split easily but taste fantastic.
A great success this year was Chocolate Cherry F1. I bought one plant from a garden centre and also rooted a side shoot from it. Big dark cherry toms almost golf ball size and lovely flavour.
Tried Gardeners Delight a few times but always disappointing for me!
Aubergines and cucumbers have been fantastic this year. I would recommend Burpless Tasty Green cucumbers, grown outside in big pots.0 -
A second for Burpless cucsWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0
