Tomato Cultivars For Next Year

Now that the weather is starting to become slightly more autumnal, I'm descending into the world of catalogues, a little fantasy and wood burning stoves and am trying to decide what to grow next year. My tomatoes did well - I grew Shirley and Flamme and both were nice but I'm thinking of trying different cultivars next year.

I've narrowed the varieties down to the following and these will be grown in a small (6x6) non-heated greenhouse. Opinions please on my potential choices and any other suggestions are most welcome:

Sungold
Alicante
Black Krim
Gardener's Delight

I'm definitely going to grow Sungold as it seems to have received near universal praise. I'm after excellent flavour from a plant which isn't too demanding. I've tried some heritage varieties in the past and found them fussy.

Thanks

Is that because you've tried others and GD and sungold are best or are there other reasons? Have you tried any of the other cultivars that I mentioned above?

Have tried others ( not Black Krim ) in the past, have only room for about ten in the green house. GD have never let me down. Use to grow Tumblers in hanging baskets, but too many complaints about thick skins.

I grew too many Cucumbers this year, will looking at a smaller variety. The crystal apple was good, but again taste was not great. And I was the only one that liked the cu-melon.

But next year will be the year for soft fruit , planted four new varieties this time last year, so expect a crop next year.

Thinking of growing a grape vine, if I can keep the rabbits away.
  • Right-o. I won't growing aubergines next year. They were fussy and didn''t taste much better than the ones from our greengrocer.

Forgot , won't be sowing any beetroot, another wasted crop on my family.
But might grow some onions .
  • Onions and garlic are definitely worth growing.

Not French or Italian , but English to the core so WON'T touch the foul garlic !!

But I will make a note, less runner beans and ...more 'French Beans'
And I heard Bob Flowergrew suggest better pollination with white flowered runner beans not the common red.

PS must remember to write all these suggestions down

If you want to add some colour?

    Yellow or Golden Sunrise
Auriga (orange) - that had a good flavour

And it you want to get further off - Green Zebra or Potato Leaved White.

Note potato leaved tolerate lower tempuratures but will cross pollinate, so only grow one if you want to save your own seed.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

    Sungold for sure

Runner versus French beans, They need different nigh time temperatures, I always hedge my bets and grow both, climbing French Cobra, decimated and ruined by slugs & snails this year, Runner Galaxy, did will

The advantage of white flowered runners is the birds don't eat the flowers, but I have not had this problem, probably due to local cats
    Numerus non sum
  • I too grow Cobra. Best beans I've ever grown by far.
