Munich for my husband's 40th july 2015

Hi
I'm planning to surprise my hubby and take him to Munich for his 40th next July.
Any tips on where to stay. Easy to get to from the airport but central with lots to do and see.
And I'm pretty clueless when it comes to football, but will this be out of season. i.e. No chance to see a bayern Munich game, but maybe I could do a stadium tour???

Any tips/suggestions very welcome.
Thanks

  • What is it about Munich that makes him want to go there or is it your choice? Is it just the football?

    Budget?
  • Hi, I'm not quite sure. He's been to quite a few other places in Germany already. I think he just fancies it.

Stadium tour info here. Maybe buy him a VIP tour for his birthday, if they do them when you're there and there's one in English (assuming he's not a fluent German speaker).

It's a lovely city, one of my favourites, and not too big to explore. Wherever you stay it's small enough to be able to get around by U-Bahn or tram.

If he likes his cars there's the BMW museum which is enjoyable and is near the Olympic park with it's tower that gives great views.

The BMW museum mentioned above is the BMW Welt as you will see from my link, if hubby is into car it is a good day out and on certain days they do factory tours in english
  • Thanks folks.
Not really into cars, but it looks good.
History more his thing. And football!

I've not really got a budget. I just don't want to be too far from the airport. Just somewhere clean and comfy to sleep for 2 nights, we'll be out all the time.

if your into history then dachau is not that far away
have a wander around the engish garden as well - its lovely on a nice day
also the centre of munich is only about half an hour away on the train from the airport so you would have a lot more options for hotes

Very good city to visit. For me the highlight apart from walking around the centre by the Rathaus is the Residenz palace

Lots of good galleries if that's your kind of thing - google Pinakotheke.

I would suggest you stay near the centre rather than by the airport. Day tickets are cheaper for the central area which is all you need for the tourist sites. For two of you you want to get a Partner card. These are valid all day on buses, trams, U-Bahn and S-Bahn. To and from the airport you need an all zones partner card. It's about 40 minutes on S8.

This cafe is an experience to visit for Schmalznudel and coffee. Next to the market which is also worth a walk around.

  • A free walking tour is a good place to start - Sandemann's do a great free one where you just tip at the end if you've enjoyed it and it covers the history of Munich. Dachau is a really interesting trip if he likes that period of history and is on the S Bahn with an XXL day ticket, which also covers the bus from the station right to the entrance. There's lots of hotels round the Hauptbahnhof which takes about 15 mins to walk into the city centre - or if you're getting public transport tickets it's a few stops on the U bahn. I really liked the ibis in Schwabing Parkstadt - the location is really quiet surrounded by office blocks but a 5 minute tram ride away from Schwabing, which has more going on and 3 stops on the U bahn from Odeonsplatz, 4 from Marienplatz. As we were only in the hotel after a full day out, dinner and drinks it didn't bother us that it was out of the centre - and it was half the price of hotels in the centre!

A great city - highly recommended. Incredibly good transport system, for which you should look into getting a Partner Day Ticket for the whole network (Partner Tageskarte Gesamtnetz) for your arrival and departure day. It costs around 21.30 euros, which covers two people for unlimited journeys, whereas two singles from the airport to the centre would cost around 11€ each. You can buy them online and print them at home, which saves time at the ticket machines each day.
There are cheaper versions if you only want the inner zones, as you only need the entire network one for the airport journeys. There's a drop down menu to select which version you want.
This is the English language version:

There are no ticket barriers and you only need to show your ticket if you get asked by inspectors, which is not that often.
