Could we just twist your arm and force you to enter this competition to stay at one of the country’s most gorgeous hotels for two nights, with your beloved or best girlfriend - or perhaps your mother? Charlton House Hotel, which dates from 1630, is tucked into the rolling hills of Somerset in Shepton Mallet, about 45 minutes from Bath (one of our favourite cities ever, by the way). The 25 bedroom hotel is privately owned by Roger Saul (the very clever chap who created Mulberry), and his wife Monty, who’s passionate about mind/body/spirit wellbeing and holistic medicine - thus Monty’s Spa. It’s perfect really: gorgeously decorated, super-comfortable, heavenly food – and wonderfully welcoming.
A bit more about the food: since leaving Mulberry, Roger has become a born-again organic farmer. At Sharpham Park, the Sauls’ medieval house which was once an abbey, he grows the ancient grain called spelt, as well as raising rare-breed livestock; he’s also replanted acres of walnut trees, once a key crop for the area. There’s no wheat served at Charlton now, just this delicious grain – which leading chefs including Giorgio Locatelli much prefer to cook with incidentally. All the food is locally sourced – and as a west country dweller herself, Sarah knows how fabulous all the local seasonal produce is. The restaurant by the way has already won awards for its imaginative gastronomic delights.
And the spa: well, the style is exotic, oriental, sumptuous – the Sauls call it ‘Kasbah’. Think rich, jewel colours and opulent drapes - wonderful for the maximalist in your soul… contrasting dramatically with natural materials – seashells, wood, slate, stone marble and crystals. The two treatments for each person, which are part of the prize, are Monty’s Ultimate Spelt Therapy Treatment and Monty’s Ultimate Spelt Facial Therapy (each valued at £135). These are based on Spelt Germ Oil (from Sharpham Park), which has high levels of essential fatty acids to restore and revitalise skin, making it glowing and peachy-plump, plus vitamin E to boost skin elasticity and promote cell rejuvenation. The body treatment includes Monty’s own aromatherapy oils hand blended with spelt husks and the Spelt Germ Oil. With the facial treatment, you will also have a hot stone massage (if you’ve never had one, take it from us, it’s divine).
So – can you resist? We don’t think so… For more information or if you just can’t wait go to there, visit www.charltonhouse.com and www.montyspa.com.
