They seem to be popping up on all the boards and it's annoying.
If an ordinary member of MSE did ask this then where is the original post? I think I find it annoying because I feel that they are treating us like idiots. Why not just say that this is a hypothetical situation? If the OP wasn't MSE staff we'd think they were trolling.0 -

I assumed it was to lighten the mood of the forum. As such its success is equivocal.0 -

we are going for an indian - everyone likes curry - we went to the same place last year, and they were so accommodating with the fact 3 members of staff had serious food allergies, we are going back this year.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0

Solution to that non problem is not to have one. Give each member of staff £20 tax free in their December pay packet.0

Works dos put pressure on the lowest paid staff. Secret Santas put pressure on the lowest paid staff. Nights out that require fancy clothes, babysitters and cab fare home put pressure on the lowest paid staff.
Save the money and increase wages instead. Far more useful than causing additional stress to those who just about manage to feed and house themselves whilst senior staff don't even notice the expense.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Nothing on this planet would make me go to a work's Christmas do - haven't been to one for years (amazing how my dairy is full!)
I'm not anti social but I have no wish to spend a fortune on a sub standard meal and more importantly time with people who I wouldn't normal go out with.
And for that reason I would have to decline the role0 -

If they cant afford it, they say, "no, sorry cant come."0 -

From experience, that usually elicits extreme disapproval from management and comments about not behaving as part of the team, plus suggesting that you can't afford it is criticising the employer for not paying enough / breaking rules about never discussing salaries.
Obviously not everybody I know is struggling - the people who tell me I can't be paid for overtime and should be offering to do it out of the goodness of my heart earn over 100K, for example. But they are the same people who can't understand why a school trip costing £480 for three nights was only taken up by five families, as, to quote one of them 'a week's holiday is two thousand, this is cheap'.
But friends, yes, most find it tough. The ones who don't, remember what it was like, though, and would rather pay someone better in the first place.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0
