Ask the [STRIKE]poor sod[/STRIKE] fortunate person how it was done and what happened last year, and the many years before that.
No point in re-inventing the wheel......................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Find out what your budget is. Decide if there is a dress code (smart/casual)
Book a area in a nice bar with free drinks and snacks. Done.
I wouldn't recommend putting it to a vote otherwise those that lose will feel bitter.0 -
As others have said don't put it to a vote, that just gives people options to moan.
Hopefully it is not obligatory anyway and those that want to can avoid the forced jollities.0 -
Works Christmas functions are the stuff of nightmares. Getting drunk with people you may or may not like but are forced to work with every day is something to avoided at all costs. The repercussions can run on until Easter after a particularly bad one.
So......Find a restaurant or pub that does basic cheap food and drink. Book it and then don't turn up. Invent an illness or family crisis if necessary. With a bit of luck it will be a disaster and nobody will ever ask you to organise one again. Job's a good 'un.:dance:We're gonna be alright, dancin' on a Saturday night:dance:0 -
Make it so bad you'll never be asked to do it again. it's by far the best outcome.Pants0

Unless of course it is the boss's initiative test for the organiser. It is a chance to get credit for a job well done or to be blamed for a shambles. Could ask the boss what sort of event he likes?Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
