Christmas??

This year it's my turn to do christmas day on boxing day! It's something we've been doing since my first grandchild was born, in order that each set of grandparents 'has a fair turn' of the day. My son and daughter both co-ordinate so that they either come to me or their partners' parents on The Day and go to 'the other one' on the Boxing Day. Trouble is, my dear offsprings insist that their partners parents 'don't do it properly'. My daughter's MIL is Italian and insists on doing lasagne as a first course, with the result that they're all too full by the time the main course comes along. My son mutters darkly about frozen turkey being carved out of sight and plated up and shop-bought stuffing. The result is that neither of them think they've had a proper christmas dinner and make me do it on boxing day when it's my turn to miss out christmas day. So when you lot are sitting down to cold turkey and gammon, think of me still doing the roast!0

Oh-oh. Assuming I get this gynae surgery over and done with next Friday (at present it's looking a bit doubtful because I have a heavy cold, chesty cough and 'flu-like symptoms) we'll be having a long weekend in Leeds probably before Christmas, depending on when my daughter's surgery happens.
Other than that, Christmas for us is the church Carol Service the Sunday before, church on Christmas Day and then lunch at a lovely old pub we go to near here, an old coaching inn with 200 years of history, bags of atmosphere and lovely food. I won't be having turkey in any shape or form. Then, home with lots of DVDs to watch to avoid having to watch Christmas TV. Sorted!

So it will be just him and me, in our own home for once. He's a good cook, shall just stay in bed, catch up with my reading and let him get on with it. :jAll Art is the transfiguration of the commonplace

kittie and chesky, the nearest thing I've got to a 'tradition' at Christmas is that EVERYONE has to help get the veg ready: we sit round the table on Christmas Eve (but you could do this as soon as they arrive on Boxing Day) with ALL the veg peelers and knives and chopping boards and veg, I make sure everyone has their favourite tipple (usually milkshakes and juice in this house!) and some chocolate, and no-one gets up until it's all done.
I would also let adults and older children sort their own beds out: this is one of the few things my MIL lets us do - although she does scurry round making sure we have enough blankets and pillows and insisting we need more - we're all in sleeping bags on fold-out cushions or lilos in different rooms.
and if I've cooked, I'm DEFINITELY not clearing up!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
and if I've cooked, I'm DEFINITELY not clearing up!
ABSOLUTELY. As I'm usually three parts sloshed by cheese and port time, I take myself to the settee and let everyone else sort the clearing, washing up, putting away - only trouble is, next day I can never find anything.0 -
only trouble is, next day I can never find anything.
The irritating thing is that if I buy some more, they'll turn up! And the even MORE irritating thing is that I'd like another cheese slicer like it, and I can't find one ANYWHERE, although the wires are reasonably freely available!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I am DEFINITELY not clearing up and when someone mentions a WALK!!!! no bloomin way. I`ll be flopped on the settee watching a good film and re-couping some energy.
I like the idea of a peeling gathering around the table on christmas eve. Thats going to be a new tradition in our house
I have cheated and made a veggie order from
http://www.cookfood.net/about/
I have a veggie arriving who is also a very good chef. Shes lovely but comes for the rest.
I have already had an order from them and the food is FANTASTIC
I have also placed another order for meaty/fishy meals for the two of us for when everyone leaves
oops I suppose that is ski-ing but who cares. I aim to enjoy the season0 -
I suppose you could always feign a dodgy stomach on Christmas Eve, no one will want you cooking especially if you give them all the grim details.....My Mind wanders, if found please return.0

Well, we've changed our plans yet again.
Being good MSE-ers we had another think about the Christmas Day pub/restaurant meal we booked some weeks ago. The cost of that one meal, without wine, would buy us groceries for 2 weeks. In addition, we have the trip to Yorkshire, a 3-night stay, on the horizon, which we didn't know about when we made the meal arrangement. So, we probably won't do anything special about a Christmas meal at all. Just go to church, go to the Carol Service the Sunday before, and for celebration, concentrate on the weekend away and our 6th wedding anniversary in early January.
Every year I feel less and less like bothering at all. Every time the Christmas ads come on TV I feel like rebelling against what we're expected to do. Lulu for Morrisons, Jamie Oliver for Sainsburys, yawn yawn yawn. All that artificial snow and bright artificial smiles. Big yawns.
