Tesco mobile top up query
Am I right in thinking that the top up deal which says "top up £15 and get £45 credit" means that you have to top up £15 every month to get £45 of credit to use the following month?
I topped up a relative who does`nt use her PAYG phone much, and bought her a £15 voucher. When I dialled 4444 and topped up, the balance was only up by £15, not £45.
It was only after that I thought that this triple top up deal would only apply to monthly top ups.
Any Tesco Mobile customers confirm this?
and..... is GiffGaff better?

>> What is the Pay as you go Triple Credit Tariff?
'Triple credit' that lasts for a month and has numerous restrictions is a marketing ploy. Just compare your 25p/10p to Tesco Lite (8p/4p). I don't think that Giffgaff is better than Tesco Lite for pure PAYG without bundles, but '3' 321 is definitely better.0 -
What'll happen is that you may not have that triple for the first month (sadly
) but then for the following months, as long as you top up before that set date, you'll then get your triple each time.
IMO for those who don't actually use their phone much, topping up in this way is probably not the best, as it's essentially encouraging you to spend that same money each month when you're probably not actually getting through a speck of that usage.
If they were seriously considering spending £15 a month then you can get a very decent phone for that.
Sim only is best way to go - £7.50 a month and as much usage as they'll need, easy.0 -
As Grumbler states the Tesco Lite tariff is cheaper at 8p a minute and is a basic tariff that is useful for the occasional user. You can switch from Triple credit to Lite tariff online by creating an account to manage the PAYG number on Tesco Mobile's website at -

Also the Lite tariff does not charge any extra (than 8p a min) to call many 08 numbers which can be useful. Network Three is cheaper still but you must have a 3G phone to use it.0 -
Pay £10 on the lite tariff your get 125 minutes to 01/02/03 or Uk Mobile Numbers at 8p a minute.
Pay £10 on the triple your credit your get £30 but the calls cost 25p so your only get 120 minutes.0 -
If you have originally put £15 onto the PAYG sim, then it will give the user the extra triple credit for 30 days afterwards to use (applied within a little time after the top-up), leaving the original £15 untouched.
After that the user may simply use the phone as and when they need to until the original amount of £15 has almost been used up. This may take months depending on how much use they make of it.
The next top-ups can be a minimum of £10 (which will then give £30 free credit for the next 30 days... then gradually use the original £10......and so on). If used properly, then it is effectively a free month of use followed by using the amount it was topped up with.
This method used to last me about 4 or 5 months per top-up as my phone use is quite low.
Now if, after the free credit has expired / been used, and they find that they use more texts, data or more call minutes than usual, then the original top-up amount can be used to buy a specific £5 Bundle (read on the site) which gives extra to each of these things. BUT be aware that a Bundle will auto renew after 30 days unless it is cancelled on the account about a week before it is due to renew. A reminder text usually warns that it will be renewed. A Bundle can be bought again at any time it's required.
It simply requires that someone be willing to remember to keep in mind (or make a note of) when any purchased Bundles are due to expire.0 -
