Help with Natwest

Hello, sorry to ask for help but I'm not sure what to do.

I have just checked my credit report after a long time to find a default registered by Natwest in December for £946.

I had a current account with Natwest for a few years and switched to Santander in February last year. I have attached an image of what the credit report shows.

I wanted to get in touch with you guys first before I contact Natwest as I haven't a clue what I should be asking.

I haven't had any correspondence from Natwest that I'm aware of and never had a credit card with them. Just an overdraft.

Thank you for your help.

Does the entry on your credit file say it was for a credit card account?

    No, I'll copy what it says on the credit report;

    Account type: Current Account
    Account number: **************1002 0
    Account start date: 11/02/2010
    Repayment frequency: Monthly
    Date of default: 30/11/2013

So according to them you owe them money on the current account.

By the look of your credit file it looks like either you incurred an unauthorised overdraft at some point in September 2013, or that they recalled an overdraft you had up until that point.

Do you still live at the same address as the one the bank had when you last used the account, presumably in February 2013?

I would be writing to ask them for an explanation of the entry and outstanding balance showing on your credit file and for a full transaction breakdown of the alleged debt.

I did have an overdraft with Natwest, only £250 but I left them and had the account closed many months before this default business?

No, I have been in a new property for over a year. I moved in May Last year.

Sometimes this can happen if a person has a continuous payment authority set up on the current account (e.g. AA membership renewal is a typical one, insurance renewals are sometimes a possibility). It also used to happen with late presented guaranteed cheques sometimes.

In some cases the bank will honour the CPA and pay the funds, and so can put the closed account overdrawn.

Alternatively it could be an error by natwest.

You will need to ask them for further information, and best to do so in writing.

  • Ok, I've spoken to Natwest who basically gave me contact details of Capquest DCA that theyve sold the debt to. I spoke to them and explained all, their response was basically "can we take the 16 digits from the front of your debit card"

So I went back to Natwest who said I needed to talk to Santander as they did the switch.

I spoke to Santander who have said that I need to talk to a manager at Natwest as there is no reason they couldnt remove this debt and default in the circumstances.

So I've just spoken to a manager at Natwest once again, in the recovery team who has just taken all of the details again, and will pass it to the complaints team to investigate it.

Lets hope this gets me somewhere but I'm rather doubtful.

    Any more advice?

    Thanks,
    Richard

That type of runaround is typical by phone, which is why writing usually works best.

If you do not get any where with the complaints team by phone then I would write a letter to natwest, simply to state that you have noticed the entry on your credit file, you are unaware of any debt to them and to ask them to provide details of the alleged outstanding debt.

Thats what I thought, but thought I'd have a go at first, see if it could be resolved simply. Obviously not.

Thank you for your help though.

Thats what I'm not sure about. I know funds were transferred when I switched but never even thought about the overdraft. Surely that wouldnt have been moved over? I know I wasnt in my overdraft when the switch happened as I'd only just been paid!

Natwest are sending out a full statement from January to now so I should be able to see
