All sounds rather odd to me - I wouldn't believe everything being told to you if I was you

...that's what I thought. Strange things do happen I suppose, but then OP says her brother won't entertain the idea of reporting it to the police...

I agree with the report it consensus. After all, what if it's involved in a hit-and-run? It's your door that will be getting knocked on by the boys in blue.

Madam, your car has been involved in a fatal accident.

But it was stolen from our driveway three months ago!

Did you report it stolen, Madam?

    Er, no ...

As I said, your car has been involved ...

    Doesn't look good.

"How odd. They lost every single one of the five postal SORN notifications I made..."
    Mmmm.

Coincidentally outrageous claims are made all the time. Unless anyone can prove anything to the contrary they still have to be taken at face value.

I am not sure as to why the OP is bothered. If it is not their car then it has nothing to do with them, and there won't be any repercussions that affect them.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

after reflection - brother has his reasons for not reporting, i am not party to these, and any come back is on his head - the whole buisness freaked me out for a while. i have dealt with the repercussions of his stupidity before and no doubt can again.

the car itself is a rusting write off and only useful for scrap - i doubt any part is usable due to its condition - let alone the car being put back on the road!!
