I have just had a look on ebay and if you did want say a good Samsung netbook N145 with 2gb RAM and Windows 7 starter there are some available for £70.

Nothing wrong with Linux if that is what you want. Just not sure that it would be the OS of choice for a young 'un.
Samsung Netbooks do benefit from a clean install of Windows 7 Starter without the bundled software.

Although as Nifty indicated the ones on ebay generally do not have any warranty as they are used machines from private sellers
