Days of a British Manufacturer are long gone they are now at best British essembled. Its very sad but still you can pick a good quality bike for a couple of hundred rather than thousand!

At one time Raleigh owned manufacturers of all parts of a bike, like Sturmey Archer etc you could go round the factory and see one from start to finish. Special Products made for a while but I believe they could have gone now. Raleigh did own a number of bike companies all over the world too USA, Holland, Russia, China all over basically as well as Royal Worcester and Spode I think - or Derby International did which was the controlling company.

You can repress a yamn now TMI!

with an ego that needs a £1400 bike
My bike is worth just under £1k, and my boyfriends 3 bikes cost over £1k each (one of which is an Orange Patriot... Mmmm) but he certainly doesn't have a big ego... He just likes riding bikes...

I suspect the OP's other half is new to the mountain biking scene though so it's absurd to be spending so much so early on unless you have that kind of money going spare. £300 will get you a more than adequate beginners bike.

I agree with Cazzdevil! £300 would be more than enough as a starting out bike!! He can get "the one" at a later date when he proves he has ridden the other enough to warrent such a big step.

Also, he will never get a brand new bike through customs....he will be paying tax on it when he comes through. I used to live in the States, and it's unlikely that he wouldn't be pulled when he gets to the other side!!

And you don't wanna be caught lying to the customs people....they don't like it at ALL!

What was the decision in the end? The ultimate sanction is of course to take away his credit cards........!
