I think if that was my OH the police would need to be called to calm me down!
Pardon me for asking but does he really care about the situation you and your kids are in? It sounds like he is putting himself first to a massive scale. Fifteen hundred pounds is more than a lot of peoples monthly wage after tax and with all the debt you are in then its absolutely absurd! That money would make a huge difference to your DFD and imho he is being a selfish git!
Sorry if that comes across as harsh but I dont think he is being fair to your or your children.Debt Free - done

Sounds like you need to be a little clever here !
Do some research on the bike and find out why he needs to spend £1400 on it, ask him why it needs to be that particular bike. He wont have a good answer for you as theres no reason to spend that much on a bike for what hes going to use it for
its not as if hes planning to enter the Tour de France ?
If its just to get fit what about a cycle machine ? I think you need to be prepared for his excuses ! Oterwise he will baffle you with techie bike jargon
P.S My Kona Cindercone (Bike) cost £800 but I did give up my car for it .. and now ride to work EVERY day. I wanted a bike that would last a long time and stand up to the job ... and it has been going 4 years so far with only minimal maintenance Tyers, chain link etc .. saved myself a packet !LBM - 20/05/07Well that all went FUBAR0 -
Can't offer any advice - only sympathise - My OH quite often sees things he "just has to have or life won't be worth living"
Maybe you could put this advert on your fridge door and he might get the hint

It is completely unreasonable of him to want to spend that much on a bike. Is he this unreasonable about other things or is this a one off aberration? You really need to stop him from doing this. I agree with others that it is incredibly selfish of him. Imagine if you did the same thing! Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally

He's being a selfish eejit.
I hope you intend to wait until enough people have said so and then print this thread and get him to read it.
Or possibly get the text tatooed across his gut, so that if he doesn't listen, buys the bike, at least he'll have the incentive to use said bike so both gut and text will get smaller.0 -
I can't believe that he wants to spend £1400 on a bike when u've moved out of the country to try to save money, u owe (I assume!) £40k ish and there is fitness stuf he can use for free. If that was my OH, I would be proper  .
Can u sit him down and talk to him, tell him how concerned u are etc? Or is he not the type to listen?

Ouch - you can get a perfectly good Trek or Gary Fisher bike for £500 in Stockholm (with excellent suspension). Even then it's not that necessary if you stick to the cycle paths that cover most of greater Stockholm.
Try and encourage him to check out www.blocket.se - bit like a second hand listings version of ebay. He might even save money by buying it new in the UK and flying it back on Ryanair.0 -
Do what I did - divorce the selfish b@st@rd!! lol - just kidding (about you doing it, not what I did!).
Once I paid my ex his half of the equity from the house he went out and bought a £3k mountain bike so now we're both happY!!
