Can you tackle it from a different angle and start talking about the dangers of parking such a bike anywhere public at all, insurance for it etc. This has worked a little bit in my DHs desire for a more expensive car, in the end he had to accept that it would get scratched or damaged. An expensive bike would be very desireable for thieves. Failing that, could you tell your DH that you totally accept his desire for the bike. Is there anything he is willing to give up for it (any treats he still has) or is he prepared to hold off until (**) a certain point in your debt repayment schedule.

Poor you tho, it's horrible always being the sensible one..

I agree with belfastgirl. Ask him what HE is going to give up to get the bike. Ie if he goes to the pub, will he give that up for x weeks to get the bike. Not what WE will give up, what HE will? That might make him think a bit.

But in all honesty that bike cost more than my mortgage payments for a month:eek: . If the reason for the move is to pay down your debt etc, and keep your house, I just can't see how he can square a £1400 spend with this reasoning.

I would explain that you don't want to be in sweden longer than is necessary because your children are missing their family as are you. So the quicker you can save the quicker you can go home.

Also the tax in Sweden will be more than the tax into UK, so it would be better to wait until he gets back.

But to say (when he has access to a free pool and gym) that he need a bike to get fit, is complete rubbish. He is being very childish.
    Sorry rant over.

Yeah, he'll still pay customs tax on it when he brings it back in, even if he is escorting it. It's one thing to hide an ipod in your luggage and claim it's old but it's hard to hide a brand new bike...

It's a crazy thing to do when you're that much in debt, incredibly selfish.

Are you allowed to go out and spend £1,500 on something that you really want as well? (I know you won't, but wondered).

£50 for a full suspension?? I wouldn't waste my money. To get an anywhere near decent full susser you have to spend at least £800, better off going to Halfords and getting a Carerra Kraken or a GT Aggressor for £200 - £300. Far better bike for the money and it will stand up to most cross country routes.

Of course the best thing for hubby to do is take up running or walking - free forms of exercise which will get him fitter far quicker than cycling.

Don't worry, I only posted that link as a joke - someone who is considering a £1400 bike is never going to even look at a Sterling House one. :p

Mind you, me and the OH have had Sterling House bikes for 1 year now and they've done us well - although we are really not serious bikers by any stretch of the imagination.

Hello, thought I would chip in - £1500 for a bike is an absolute crime. You've given up so much, you've admitted you have a house you struggle to afford and he wants to spend what to me is over a month's wage on two wheels and a seat!?

You can get a bike in the UK for £99 (or cheaper 2nd hand). Tell him if it's only the fitness aspect he is interested in he can nip over to blighty and get one of those - and that since it's not a neccesity he's lucky he's getting that! I fail to see how him wanting to get fit equates to a £1500 bike and a transatlantic jaunt!

If he insists on buying the bike..tell him you positively NEED a pair of gucci boots. Sure, other boots will do but you want the best (like him!)- and you simply must buy them in Milan!
