So would 1 be the slowest and 3 the fastest?

Can you change into these gears whilst moving?

    (1) Yes
    (2) You can, but it is not wise ( or even possible on most auto cars ) to select lower gears at high speed.

My car doesn't have 1,2 or 3. I wouldn't know what to do if it had. If I move the gear lever across, there's a + and a -, and I can move the gears up or down. I only really use this for overtaking, then I change down, then up. I have 6 gears though.

Please, please, don't sit on the brake pedal at traffic lights. As Hansi said it's incredibly annoying for the driver behind you who gets blinded by your completely unnecessary brake lights. Use the handbrake if you are stopped for any length of time.

Also sitting at the lights with your foot on the brake is a safety issue also. If someone hits you from behind with your foot on the brake you may release the foot brake & slam into someone else in front of you. If you put the handbrake on it will stop the car moving forward better than if your foot slipped off the pedal.

    Please be patient with me.

I understand the concept of Drive, Neutral and Park and when and how they should be used. I cant get my head around the concept on 1-2-3. Does anyone actually use these when they drive their automatic?

We have already answered that Lucy.

If you are not sure or happy about using the gears on an Auto, just let it do it's own thing.;)

Lucy, i'd never driven an automatic before we got the car we have just now. My sister had an auto, and i'd think i'd never manage to drive one! Honestly, it's easy. And, I know that in my car, you never need to use the gears. All I use is park, drive, neutral and reverse. Very occassionally, when overtaking (I rarely overtake lol) I might use the gears. Very easy, especially good when your stopped on a brae.

Thanks....lets just see how it goes. I am trying to understand as much as possible as I am having lessons in a semi-automatic.

Hear Hear. I have had many "ding dongs" with Honest John and others who favour "two feet automatic driving" In my opinion, VERY DANGEROUS PRACTICE.
