request his contact details and ring him. How much was the item.
If you don't answer the door, who's to say you are in?
You do not have to accept a courier.
  • You need to be wary of the paypal on collection scam - if the buyer uses their own courier, you will have no tracking to prove you sent the item, and they could potentially claim not to have received it.

As per RainbowDrops- read that thread urgently.

Also, as it will tell you, if you refund the paypal payment then firstly you will get a defect and secondly you cannot force the buyer to pay cash. However, for a high risk item probably worth taking the defect and keeping the item.

But equally it's not reasonable in any situation to say you'll send a courier giving the seller no leeway with time, even in a normal sale.

I don't think anyway is suggesting it is a reasonable at all- I would certainly never assume, as a buyer, that collection in person is the same as sending a courier.

That's not exactly the point I'm making, we don't know what the op agreed to time wise when presumably he/ she thought it was collection .

But I'm saying to stay in for an unspecified time - which is often what you get with couriers- isn't part of the agreement.

sending a courier is still not part of the listing- OP states it is a collection only.

A courier will need item packed, boxed (whatever) and labelled- that is not 'collection in person'

  • I'm having a similar problem myself. Sold something recently which was not a high value item but is huge. It requires at least 3 maybe 4 people to move it and in my ad i asked that it be collected within 3 days due to needing the space (I know i can only ask this and not enforce it, but didn't foresee it taking longer than a week for buyer to arrange collection)

This is where it gets rather messy. After a week of accepting the best offer, i contacted the buyer 3 times over the course of the following week asking when he woul be able to collect it. No response from buyer. Assuming buyer had changed his mind i refunded the paypal payment, he then emails within 12 hours asking why i had refunded and that he had paid quite a bit of money for a courier (no mention of a courier being sent or even asking if this was ok, but hey ho)

I explained i had assumed he no longer wanted the item as there had been no contact, he apologised and i sent a paypal request for the payment again which he eventually paid after a few days and a paypal reminder being sent.

10 days ago i had a call from the courier asking if they could come the following afternoon which i was genuinly not going to be there so told them it wasn't suitable, they replied they would contact me the following week to re-arrange.

After trying to call them, it just goes to an answer phone, i eventually manage to ring the buyer who goes on to tell me that he will keep trying them but that the fact i won't leave a voicemail for this courier company or continue to try and contact them is 'annoying'

This item sold on 1st September and to be honest I just want out of the whole transaction now.

Sorry this was longwinded but can anyone explain what options i have please?

You have very few options, collection only can be a bit of a gamble and this time I suspect you might have lost your stake. Have a read of the sticky thread mentioned in a previous post, it is all covered there.

Basically though, you have no way of enforcing collection, and if courier does collect you still run the risk of a claim for damage or non arrival.

Just as a bit of an audit, can you check your seller dashboard where it shows defects, I am interested to know whether the refund of the PayPal payment has shown up yet as a defect. Some sellers are saying they haven't had defects, whilst the majority do seem to get one on a refunded payment where no case has been opened to cancel.

  • My main problem though is the amount of time this has taken to be collected. 22 days on and it seems i'm doing all the chasing.

Re my dashboard, there is 1 defect recorded but that is down as an item not received. I don't recall a dispute from a buyer though, so this may be recorded due to the refund
