TV Service providers, what laws

Options
Hi there forums

I am just wondering what consumer (or other) laws TV channels/companies require to abide by, be it the content they show, advertising or any other content provided.

We know of the BBC charter but would the BBC also require to adhere to other laws, such asthe Sale of Goods Act 1979 or the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982.

I am just wondering if the SAD FART rights (as described in MSEs Consumer Rights section) apply to TV services.

Thanks in advance.

Am also curious about this. I really can't see how the BBC could breach either of the 2 mentioned acts.

Television is a service so the Sale of Goods Act won't apply.

  • The reason for this thread is that I have no doubt that the BBC, as well as other TV service providers, are blatantly in breach of their editorial guidelines (bbc.co.uk/editorialguidelines/page/guidelines-impartiality-introduction/), as well as their guidelines on the coverage of the Scottish Independence Referendum (bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/assets/files/pdf/our_work/peb/2014/referendum_guidelines.pdf)

I have made complaint on a number of occasions but I get the generic response from the BBC 'We believe we are impartial, we have rules we need to follow, the BBC thinks it follows the rules (although the BBC is not externally audited)'. It's a bit like a pedophile saying 'I have checked and there are no indecent images on my hard drive, officer'...

I will read up on the Ofcom code and see what I can find out.

    Now this thread makes sense.

The YES campaign got it into their heads that the BBC tried to promote the NO campaign and hinder the YES campaign, and the YES sheeple blindly believed what their campaigners said.

Of course it was utter bullocks ... I saw quite a bit of the campaign and over the whole piece the BBC coverage was NOT biased towards either camp. Of course there were sections where the NO campaign had prominence; there were equally (if not more-so actually) sections where the YES campaign had prominence.

Invariably any street shots of the NO campaign had YES flags and posters in the background; the number of incidences of the opposite (NO in the YES background) were far fewer.

tl;dr ... OP has sour grapes because YES lost.

You have a viewpoint on this that is biased because of what you supported in the referendum. The same would apply to the many many people who complained that the BBC's reporting was biased because it featured the Yes campaign too much...
And you've got angry at what in your 'Yes campaign' viewpoint you see as 'biased' reporting and equating this to pedophilia ?
I really hope you get no sensible responses to this as you're simply an appalling person. I know we're supposed to be nice to newbies, but really what an utterly disgraceful comparison.

    Just another bitter idiot.

We said NO that's the end of it.
  • have i just read that correctly, comparing (possible) bias of a TV channel to a heinous crime with probable life changing consequences to the victim?? really???

Personally, while I would agree that yes supporters were far too sensitive about some things, there was a clear bias in some (not all) of the reporting.

And I believe studies conducted here in scotland and around the world also came to the same conclusion. They found that even when saying something positive about independence, it was always sandwiched between two negatives.

There was also the clip with nick robinson saying salmond "didnt answer". The bbc replied to complaints saying it was a two part question and although salmond had answered one part, he didnt answer the other and that was the part they were talking about on the news. However salmond did answer him on the second part - just not as extensively as nick wouldve liked. IMO if they werent biased they would have said "we found salmonds answer to be unsatisfactory and didnt fully address the question asked of him" or something to that effect. What was reported is selective reporting at best and downright bias at worst. Either way it didnt give an accurate representation of what actually happened.

They were also guilty of reporting scare stories that were decisively not true (not just subjective) such as pensions being in danger when the UK treasury has already said it is responsible for the pensions and is no different to someone working here and retiring to spain or the likes. The only thing in question was whether they would receive the future increases.

Many people trust the media to report facts.

I also wouldnt say its sour grapes as yes campaigners were complaining about the bias before even the start of this year - the BBC's reply was that it did not have to give balanced coverage as they werent within the actual referendum campaign time period and it was only during this time that they needed to be balanced.
