Strange phone no. on my bill

Our recent quarterly bill included the following charged call:

"Mon 21 Jul 14: 17 0333 2540584 Special Svce 3.00.01 £10,900"

i.e.a charge of £10.900 for a 3 min call!!!

BT insist I made this call, but are unable to give me any information as to who owns this number.

I have looked on the Internet and it appears to be a mobile number either from Schwedt/Oder in Germany, or possibly Pakistan - but I'm not very good at roaming the Internet --

I don't keep a record of calls I make so there is a faint possibility that I may have made this call - but certainly not to Germany or Pakistan.

Could this be one of those scam calls?

I would like to get to the bottom of this mystery, so if it is my fault I don't repeat it!!

Thank you

This is what I think has happened.
The call was made to 03332540584 which is a charged at BT's standard rate (01,02,03 numbers). I presume the cost was £10.90 not £10 thousand!
The call was made at 2.17 pm on a Monday and lasted 3 hours not 3 minutes.
I also assume you are on a included call package given you up to 1 hour free, but after 1 hour you are charged at the BT rate of 9p per minute.
So the remaining 2 hours were charged at 9p given a rough total of £10.80.

So did you make a 3 hour call. Why not ring the number to see who it belongs to.
  • Why not ring the number to see who it belongs to.
Seems wise. Three hour call though?
  • Can anyone tell me how to check up on a strange number on my BT phone bill?
    It's 0333 2540584 and I am charged £10.900 for 3 mins.
I am sure I haven't called such a number - and only my husband and I use this phone.
It appears from the internet that it's either from Schwedt/Oder in Germany, or Pakistan.
Has anyone any idea how I can trace this?
BT are adamant that it's my call.
Can you help me solve this mystery?
    Thanks

Why don't you ring it and find out who is on the other end of the phone.

03 is just a normal number and charged as such.

I think you are possibly misreading the bill as the other poster says.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I don't encourage anyone to call numbers given out over the 'net, particularly when the OP is claiming they have been charged £10.90 for a three minute call

Hey, great post, i have been taking a Dallas phones for changing my business style.
    !!!!!! was that all about?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Its a UK 03 number that is not in service and is allocated to the supplier Colt Telecom

Suggest you ask BT how you could have rung it,given that its not a working line.
