O/S Daily Thread Monday 22nd September

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

    Morning all

Ttfm hope you get a drs appointment x

Both DDs are now at uni, dd2 is absolutely fine , a little homesick but doing really well and looking forward to starting her course today. Dd1 unfortunately heard one of her best friends had come back to uni at the weekend and comitted suicide , she is devastated and not sleeping , maybe the routine of uni this week will help her .and hopefully they will offer counselling

I'm off to work , it's going to be busy as 3 out of 4 of us are off either on holiday or off sick , so it's just me to do the work of 4

Have a good day everyone xx

sistercas - what awful news, I hope your DD can settle.
meanmarie - So sorry you've lost your BIL.
TTFTM - We will be checking!

Had a good Sunday dinner with friends yesterday (roast ham with all the trimmings), but their children (11 and 8) don't eat anything like that, just meat and a couple of potatoes, they just picked at that though. Different story when the deserts arrived though! My DD commented that she wouldn't have got any desert if she hadn't eaten more of her dinner!

Made a salad for lunch, and will have lo Sunday dinner for tea. DD is driving to Sheffield to see her grandparents and she's taking a flask with Jamaican bean soup in - very OS! I will have to get the bus or train to work and back so that should be interesting, although she will drop me off this morning on her way.

The weather has been glorious here over the weekend so all the washing is fairly up to date, just yesterday's tablecloth and some new bedding for DDs new room on the line. DW emptied and had a hoover through yesterday. Even managed to get the bathroom deep cleaned.

Still on my painting mission but the good weather yesterday meant I could take one of the doors outside to paint so just the other side to do, if it's nice when I get home I will take it out again to give it a coat of paint.

Hope you all have a good week and are feeling well. Take care. XX

    Good morning everyone :hello:

It's a bit nippy this morning but I think it will warm up considerably throughout the day. I'm still in t-shirts but had to pop a cardi on first thing.

Hubby has gone off to work in some rather snazzy camouflage trousers, I suppose he will be able to leap out at the bus driver now! The girls are running around like headless chickens especially as they didn't get organized enough to get their uniforms washed and dried over the weekend. I am quite cross really as they were reminded several times  and now it means I have to put the tumble dryer on .

I've taken up knitting over the weekend and my shoulders and hands are hurting from it but I am really enjoying it. I wanted something that would take me away from the computer as I spend far too many hours on it a day so I have bought some Jean Greenhowe toy pattern books and I'm halfway through making a santa. My grandchildren are fascinated but don't understand why it's taking so long :rotfl::rotfl:. I would like to knit a Nativity set next so I've ordered the wool already for that. I'm sure my arms and shoulders will get used to it soon as well.

Tonight we are having chicken madras, rice and poppadoms. I have already made this the other day and froze it so I am ahead of myself. I'm going to make some more butterfly cakes too as the last lot disappeared very quickly.

Hugs are offered to meanmarie on the loss of her BIL, and also to sistercas' DD, what a horrible shock that must have been. Hope TTFTM manages to get an appointment very soon as well.

Well that's all my waffle for today, hope you all have a great day whatever you are up too and hugs for all those who would like one. Take care xx

    Morning everyone

Birthday wishes to those celebrating a birthday, hope you have a great day x

Hugs and get well wishes to those that want/need them.

Now light, cloudy, dull and very overcast. Air feels much cooler too in the mornings and evenings.

DH up and gone to work early but not stupid early. DS1 up and gone to work.

Dinner tonight will be smoked sausage pasta.

On Saturday evening DH suggested going out Sunday morning, to enable him to do some optional caravan related stuff then stop off for some lunch somewhere – which I had agreed and thought was a good idea. He then got up on Sunday morning and decided that he wasn’t going to do that and had other things he needed to do more urgently (he has official stuff that needs to be sorted and ready for this next weekend) and that we could save the money and eat at home (again which is very true as eating out nowadays isn’t cheap). So went to visit my parents, on the way back stopped off at MrM’s as we needed bread anyway so bought a pork loin joint from their butchery counter. As it was getting too late to cook it for lunchtime, we had bacon sandwiches and a cuppa once we got home then we had the roast pork, roasties, carrots, cabbage, broccolli, Yorkshires and gravy for dinner at approx. 5pm – it was lovely with clean plates all round. We obviously did spend a bit in MrM’s but nothing like the amount that we would have done on lunch out. I’m definitely happier with meat from MrM’s – so that’s where my meat is coming from mainly. Once back on my feet, I’ll be visiting A**I for the main part of the shop and then MrM’s for anything I can’t get in A**I, which is no problem as it’s on the way home.

This is the start of another week – once this week is out of the way and we’re getting in to October it’ll feel like I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I know you shouldn’t wish the time away but I want to get back to “normal” whatever that is! And, of course, the C word won’t be far away once I’m back up on my feet, so will be needing to get organised for that and DS1’s 18th birthday, although he’s still maintaining at the moment that he doesn’t want a party, cake and any sort of celebration.

    Take care x

    Keep safe and well x

    Morning everyone.

So sad to read about the awful loss of friends and family, condolences. We can really never know what is happening in the minds of our friends and the younger generation have so many more social pressures to bear than before.

Grey'ish and wet'ish out but promises lingering in the clouds. Last day off of my long weekend so only going to go to the bank and then home. Had a few drop in visitors yesterday which was lovely, being so remote and off the beaten track (almost) it's unusual. One brought me some home made goats cheese which I am going to add garlic too. Such a nice gesture and very welcome indeed.

Did some foraging yesterday and got piles of luscious blackberries and very stained hands. :j. Froze most of the berries, not before a mini-feast of them raw. So sweet this year.

Today I have to 'strip' our old PC which runs Vista and is so slow. We've bought a new laptop instead so the desktop is going to a chap who refurbishes them, removes Windows and installs Linux. Then they go off to Africa I think. Better than the local tip.

Lunch and dinner from the freezer, lucky dip probably.

Hope everyone has a happy Monday, though Chris Evans has just played 'I don't like Mondays'.
  • Good Morning everyone, bright and sunny here but only 7 degrees outside earlier on. I think it will warm up as the day goes on but we're going to close the vents on the greenhouse as it's only a matter of time before we get the first frost.

Lots of yesterday was spent in taking down finished crops from the polytunnel and thinning out the raspberry canes, it's surprising how much bigger the plots look when they're tidied up and cleared. We also sat outside in the sun and processed 5 kilos of pickling onions which are sitting in brine until tomorrow when they'll be bottled up and vinegared. We both pong of onions though!!!

Busy week with appointments etc this coming week, today the sweep is coming to do the chimney from the woodstove, tomorrow I've got the hairdresser, wednesday I've a dental check up and DD2 and the Zebra are coming for lunch, thursday is the quiz and friday is boiler service so we're having to be around all week and fit in any necessary trips around the commitments.

The plots are definately slowing with the cropping, we're still getting half boxes of autumn raspberries a couple of times a week, the blackberries are over and He Who Knows is cutting out the old canes, the courgettes are still producing but not in the quantity they have been, the beans are finished and taken down and the tomatoes, both indoor and out, are cropping and ripening very well, the apples are picked and in store, the butternut squash on the lottie are nearly ripe enough to harvest and the parsnips will sit along with the winter cabbage until we need to lift them. I think autumn is approaching fast which will not be a bad thing will it?

Have yourselves a good day, Lyn xxx.
  • Morning :D

Long time no "see". Thought I would try and get back into swing of posting on here.

It's a real chilly morning which I am excited about because it means colder weather on it's way. I know that's not to all of your's taste LOL but I am a winter girl so the change in season always excites :j

Plan today is thoroughly dust and hoover down stairs. Did minimal cleaning over the summer and I need to give it a good going over.
BM has to go on too. I've hung washing out already (how am I so organised?!)

Tea will be sausages in chilli sauce.

Right off to take the chickywicks to school.

Sisterscas hugs for your DD xx

Meanmarie sorry about your BIL xxx

Hugs and spoons all round xx
