For anyone who is looking for a reasonably priced NEXUS 7 charger, this is the one I bought and it's the only one that I am happy with (and I have a few). It continues to charge even when the Nexus is being used.
Its from Amazon and is called "BlackBerry Portable PlayBook International Travel Charger with UK/EU/NA/AUS Adapter - Black". Costs £2.93 inc delivery.

OP have you done the "wipe cache partition" operation yet?
I did this to mine, it made a huge difference to both the speed of the device AND to the charging speed, although still it now never charges at anywhere near the rate it did from new. The problem has come from updates, I think Google/Asus deliberately slowed down the charging rate.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Not a great deal with the sort of lengths and current/voltages you are talking about with USB cables.
This page explains it best.

I was very sceptical too, but I verified the general behaviour on the test bench. Powered from a lab supply, charging current switches between several levels depending on both the power supply settings and the interconnect cable.0 -
For info, we have a Nexus 7 and Sony Xperia Z tablet at home, and both charge on either cable with no issues. Only recently noticed we had the Sony cable plugged into the Nexus downstairs, and the Sony plugged into the Nexus cable upstairs. One of them is slightly looser than the other so it has to be set on a level surface otherwise it doesn't charge properly - probably the nexus one as it is 18 months older but not sure.0
